Physical Description: DC, much to her perpetual dismay, is adorable. She will never be beautiful, may barely pass the threshold for pretty, but consistently and eternally her appearance is dumped on the doorstep of 'cute'. She looks like a pixie of a girl—has and probably always will look like a little kid. She’s got a baby face, with bright, round cheeks and long eyelashes framing big hazel-brown eyes, and even approaching adulthood hasn't lessened the child-like effect of her features. She’s tiny in stature and hasn't got any kind of a figure to speak of, she’s pretty much straight and narrow all the way up and all the way down. Her torso is fairly short, but her legs, proportionally speaking, are quite long compared to the rest of her, and they’re often contorted in some strange position, as DC treats her body much like a cat does, and seems utterly incapable of staying in a normal position for very long.
Her hair, once a deep, darker-than-chocolate brown, has been bleached and lightened to an almost streaky, dirty-blonde brown from all the time spent outside. She has ridiculously small hands, like a little kid's. Her feet are equally small, and she has to shop in the children’s department for shoes. Her skin's dusty gold, and her features truly representative of the melting pot culture she's a part of.
Personality Description: Dixie Cade, more popularly known as DC, is a half-pint pixie of a spitfire. She's got fight, bite, flash and flare all tied up in a clumsy wreck who is sensitive about her size, recently terrified of heights, and firmly dedicated to making friends with everyone she meets. Quirky and perky, friendly but blunt, she's been chastised for lack of tact more times than she can count.
She is, all in all for a witch, rather normal. She's mediocre (at best) in most of her classes, casually friendly with everyone, a bit temperamental, likes to talk about Wrock bands and swoon over the professional Quodpot players in every issue of Teen Witch magazine. She gets nervous around boys she likes, makes mistakes, and has tendency to fall flat on her face or smack into a suit of armor because she isn't paying attention. She's got her quirks—being raised by a pack of entertainers of little to no female influence sort of leaves one with some slightly uncommon skills and tendencies.
She's not afraid to speak up or lay some smack down when she sees something that needs to be rectified, and her sense of justice may be a bit on the violent side. She tends to be a little quick to jump to conclusions, but she's also quick to apologize, and sincere when she does. She's energetic and exuberant, and extremely physical both with affection and its opposite. She can be a daredevil, usually sides with the tomboys, and keeps her hurts to herself.
Perhaps the most telling example of that is her newly developed, paralyzing fear of heights. She gets cold, shaky, and downright panicky at the thought of getting back on a broom or even climbing to the top of a tower, where she used to be fearless about it. She's doing her darndest to keep it a secret and 'fix' it herself.
History: DC's mom died young, leaving DC to be raised more or less exclusively by her father and older brother, with occasional help from her kooky Aunt (a squib who travels to muggle fairs in a gypsy caravan with two camels and tells fortunes). Her father was a man with an immense sense of humor—the youngest of five, his older brother turned out to be a wizard, and when his wife confessed to being a witch shortly before AJ started showing signs of magic, he was able to handle it with aplomb. Perhaps the most telling manifestation of his humor was that he made—and makes, to this day—his living as a magician running a small entertainment business in Florida.
A very laid-back and casual man, DC's dad was nevertheless a very clever and perceptive person. Although discipline in his house was lax, he raised his children to be the sort that wouldn’t take advantage of that often. He was very determined that his children be well educated, and this extended to all aspects of life. AJ and DC received quite the liberal exposure to life as a result of his eccentric circle of friends. He was never a rich man, but he was clever enough with his budget and his lifestyle that he could provide for his children.
Luckily, by the time her magic began to make itself known, AJ was old enough to babysit her, and while it earned him a notice or two about underage magic usage, he kept her from totally blowing the Statute of Secrecy. She was delighted to learn she was a witch like her passed mother, and was bundled off to Salem with a kiss on the forehead from her Da and horror-stories from a teasing AJ. Aside from being a broom-borne disaster, wizardry school has been a perpetual highlight of DC's life, and she feels inordinately lucky to have a family that's okay with magic even when everyone doesn't have it. There is strain, sometimes, when her Pa just doesn't understand, but he tries, and so too does DC.
By the time she was a junior, she'd made Quodpot Captain for her hall—more out of sheer willpower and leadership than actual ability—but during the last game of the year, she took a nasty spill from her broom. The Quod, supposed to be neutralized from the solution in the pot, hadn't been immersed entirely, and when DC fished it out to toss to the ref and get a new one, it exploded and knocked her off her broom Because it was a 'dead' Quod, no one was expecting it, least of all DC, and so no one was quite fast enough to prevent her rather abrupt encounter with the ground. She broke a bucketload of bones—wrist, arm, ribs and collarbone—and while she was mended quite quickly and laughed it off, she's found over the summer that she's been having nightmares, and now even the prospect of climbing the stairs to the astronomy tower leaves her white, frozen, and panicked. She had to get a sleeping draught from Headmaster LeBeau to even think about the journey by Dragodirigible, and spent the entirety of it asleep. She's trying desperately hard to keep it a secret.

Why Was The Student Allowed/Permitted To Attend The Tournament?: The USA is known for their love of the underdog, and pint-sized, sweet-faced, average as white bread Dixie fits firmly in that category. But under all of that is solid strength for leadership, a genuinely kind heart, and a solid competitor. DC was allowed to come because Salem believes in giving everyone a chance--even the ones who aren't overtly obvious superstars.
Writing Sample: Sum up your character in one paragraph: Dixie Cade, more commonly known as DC, is a clumsy, pint-sized spitfire sensitive about her height and a disaster on a broom. She's quirky and peppy and will beat you DOWN if you offend her sense of justice. She has a strong heart and a friendly smile, and over the summer has developed a paralyzing fear of heights she can't seem to conquer.
