[September 1] New Beginnings, New Ideas [Zoe]

on January 16, 2012, 05:22:22 PM

9:45am

After a whole month wandering around Hogsmeade, finally it was time to know Hogwarts better. Everything was still new and even if the school wasn’t as elegant as Beauxbatons, it had its beauty and by that time of the day it was certainly cozy. After the first class, Élodie decided she needed some fresh air. All her other friends wasn’t really on the mood for that walk because of the weather - too bad to them, they were missing that beautiful view.

Ok, she knew it was going to rain anytime. But the sky was still illuminated behind the grey clouds and this view reflected on the surface of the lake was just perfect. Though summer in Scotland wasn’t as pretty as summer in France, for some reason Élodie thought it was a better picture for Vivaldi’s Summer. Her mother hated that song and forbade her to hear it. But Lola loved that song, and away from her mother, even not hearing it she could still hum and dance alone there, uncommitted, free. If someone comes she would invite to dance along.

And someone did come, though not the kind of presence she could expect there. It was way smaller and way cutest than a person. “Salut, minou![1] She said to cat, brightly, still dancing but slowly now. “Tu veux danser?[2]
 1. Hello, kitty
 2. Do you wanna dance?

Zoe sat near the lake, hidden from the french girl's sight by a tree. On the ground was a book, in Zoe's hand her wand. She was practicing a charm her father had taught her during the summer, the Featherweight charm. She was planning to use it on her bag when she carried her school books around, it would help a lot. "Relevo." With that quick spell, the young witch reached out to the book and picked it up. Almost no weight went against her hand as is was lifted into air. Zoe smiled, letting the book fall back to the ground.

It was only now Zoe realized Snowy had wandered off, she had been so focused on the spell practice. It was strange, she didn't wander off often. "Snowy, where'd you go girl?" In one swift move Zoe got to her feet and looked out from the tree she was behind. The white and gray cat was there but so was another girl. There was usually only two reasons Snowy went to inspect someone; either she was curious about someone or she could sense that the person wasn't trustworthy. Zoe kept her wand in her hand for caution as she walked towards the girl, who was for some reason dancing.

By then Snowy knew her master was looking for her and walked back to her, meowing and looking up at her. Zoe kneeled down and pet the cat with her left hand, looking up at the girl. As she didn't recognize her from Hogwarts she figured she was an international student. "Hello, I'm Zoe, Zoe Torret." After looking this girl over a few times some recognition sparked in the young witch. "You were at that cupcake stand with the other international students. I'm the girl who had the elf, remember?"

When the cat’s master approached and she walked back to the girl, who knelt to pet her, Lola stopped dancing to greet her new company. “Hello, you,” she smiled friendly, the girl was probably from Hogwarts, and she was eager to know local students better. Unfortunately on the last month she stayed more with her colleagues, it was about time to socialize with new people, even though they were technically rivals. “Your cat, right? Snowy? Soooo cute!” Lola stated with her strong accent before going kneel next to them.

"Hello, I'm Zoe, Zoe Torret. You were at that cupcake stand with the other international students. I'm the girl who had the elf, remember?"

“Oh, oui oui, I was!” Lola giggled, offering her hand to Zoe - Cici had taught her that bisous could be considered… inappropriate, to some people from there. “I am Élodie Fontaine, but you can call me Lola, everyone calls me Lola! I remember you, and your elf, my sister was so enchanté!”

She could remember perfectly of Cécile talking to her now. She thought her elf looked like a doll - not really something Lola would agree, though she has to admit Zoe’s elf was different from the ones she was used to see on her home. Better, indeed. “You shall remember Cici, I believe she would love to see you and your elf again. She will be happy when I tell her I found you here!”

“So… you are a girl with a cute elf and a cute cat! You are from here, right? Hogwarts, I mean. How old are you? You seem to be young. Are you excited about the Tournament?” The questions slipped naturally and lively from her lips, even with her accent, while Lola was carefully approaching her hand to pet Snowy, wanting to make sure it was safe before it was too late.

Zoe smiled at the girl's intrest in Snowy. She did seem rather nice, so holding a wand wouldn't be needed. As she went to put it away in her robe's wand pocket the young witch stopped and pointed it towards the tree. "Accio book!" The book Zoe had been using came out from behind it, landing in Zoe's arms. She put her wand away in its pocket now that Zoe had the book back. There would be little chance the wand would be needed again at the time. Now that her wand hand was free she shook the French girl's hand.

Out of the French Lola used most of it registered meaning with Zoe. She knew that Oui was yes and the other word had sounded like enchanted, which fit for the sentence in which it was used. But the real words that surprised Zoe was when she called the girl who had liked Lily's outfit so much 'my sister'. This was that girl's sister? What were the odds? Better yet, they both seemed actually nice. Perhaps all the French weren't like her Aunt Jaqueline, or maybe they were all just excited by fine clothes.

What came after that surprised Zoe. The large amount of questions without time given to state an answer. Her aunt never acted like that, she was too 'dignified' probably. Quickly, Zoe answered them as to not forget all the questions. "Yes I go to Hogwarts, I'm 14, not that young, yes I am excited for the tournament." Snowy, noticing the dancing girl show intrest in petting her, walked over and rubbed her forehead again the outstretched hand to show it was okay to pet her. There wasn't any bad feelings the cat had about the girl.

Now that she had the questions answered, she moved back to what she wanted to talk about. "And I'm so glad your sister likes Lily! She's a little shy, but I always thought if she had friends that weren't in my family she might not be so shy. I haven't really been able to find her a friend at Hogwarts, I mean it is kind of hard when the school has so many house elves itself. You have no idea what it took to get Lily anywhere near the house elves here in the first place. She was worried they wouldn't like a free elf like her, especially one who is so well treated. She's that way with everyone." Zoe sat down in the grass, looking over at the lake. It didn't matter to her that this wasn't the girl who had been to warm to Lily, calling Lily cute seemed enough. "I just wish she'd come out of her shell. She's really a great elf. I'm sure everyone decent would like her." Zoe sighed. She never really talked about this with anyone but Ayla, and this felt quite different. "What do you think Lola?"

Lola watched Zoe invoking the book and smiled. The girl reminded her of Cici, studying alone, so careful about the books. It wasn’t something that made Lola really proud, but books for her always worked better as pillows. She got a little curious about what Zoe was studying right on the first day, but afraid of being unable to say more than “oui, oui, oui” if the girl decided to actually talk about that, she remained quiet. If that was History of Magic, Runes or… what was that? Aramaic… mancy? She would have to call Cécile to translate to her.

"Yes I go to Hogwarts, I'm 14, not that young, yes I am excited for the tournament."

“Oooh… I am eighteen, so excited about the tournament because I will compete if the goblet chooses me.” She said it with confidence, but right after she twitched her lips in a funny way. “I am from Beauxbatons… so I guess I can not ask you to cheer for me…”

Her bright smile was a sign that it wasn’t something to bother her. Lola bent a little to pet Snowy better, giving her some attention because she was really a lovely cat. The French witch couldn’t have a furry sweet pet like that because of her sister’s allergy. Not that she ever wanted one really badly, but it was good to enjoy when she could spoil one a little.

"I just wish she'd come out of her shell. She's really a great elf. I'm sure everyone decent would like her. What do you think Lola?"

Honestly, Lola never thought much about that. Her mother was always careful enough to keep the elves on a safe distance from her. It was already too much for Manon that Élodie defended Cécile, she wouldn’t give her any more reason to fight for somebody’s rights.

“I sincèrement do not know, Zoe…” she shrugged, not with indifference though. Lola could tell it was an important matter to Zoe. She wouldn’t tell all that to a stranger if it wasn’t. “I have been raised on a place where… the elves in my home, well… they do not talk much and definitely do not like to be well treated. I would like if them all could be like Lily, she is cute and I believe you when you say she is great too… ”

“Even by your side she is afraid of knowing people and other elves? You could introduce her to your friends, maybe someone has great elves too… then she would see people are not so bad.” A too simple solution, Lola knew it, but it was all she could say by now.

Zoe laughed on the inside when Lola made a comment about not asking her to cheer for her. It was true that Beauxbatons was probably the last school she would think to cheer for. But instead of saying that, Zoe instead replied, "As long as manners isn't your religion and you don't have an ego as big as our school I might not have too much of a problem at least slightly supporting you." Though this was said with a joking smile, Zoe was being dead serious.

Snowy was loving the attenion, and Zoe could tell. The cat rubbed her forehead along Lola's hands and arms, purring. What the attention hog, but Zoe loved her anyway. She was, after all, quite a magnificent cat. It was probably Zoe's fault for giving her too much pride anyway, as she praised the feline so much and only gave her the best of the best.

Zoe knew it was a hard question to force upon Lola. At least she had answered it, kind of. "Lola, I'm sure the elves here are quite the same as back at your home. Just look at Hogwarts, its kitchen and cleaning staff is all house elves. Hundreds. And I've have introduced her to my friends, even most of my house since she comes to visit sometimes. Not many people have elves, and I've never heard of a free elf who works for someone other than Lily. Most elves I've heard of are owned by.... snakes in the grass." The last part was mumbled in a dissaproving tone. She was refering to Slytherins or those who had been in Slytherin.

Finding the topic no longer helping anyone at this point, Zoe quickly dismissed it. "Ah, nevermind. I didn't expect a good answer to that anyway. Point is, I'd be happy to have Lily and your sister meet again." Figuring that since she ending the topic that should start a new one, Zoe continued. "So, what's your favorite and least favorite thing about Hogwarts so far?"

"As long as manners isn't your religion and you don't have an ego as big as our school I might not have too much of a problem at least slightly supporting you."

Lola couldn’t understand Zoe’s speech totally. All that talk about religion and ego sounded like something really serious, but the other witch was smiling as that was a joke. Well, at least she seemed to be open to support her, and even slightly, that was important for the French girl. And as religion and manners were different things for her and, ah… her ego wasn’t Hogwarts, she thought she would be fine with Zoe. As for Snowy, that was for sure. No misunderstandings could happen with the cat, she was obviously enjoying Lola’s attention and the girl loved it.

What came next was definitely serious for Zoe. Lola never saw someone so concerned about elves before. Cici always had her moments, but it never was as deep as it was for the youngest girl. “I have always thought… that serve was part of their nature.” She admitted, not as a snake in the grass - though that was another thing she couldn’t understand quite well - but as someone that was simply raised to believe that. She was almost naïve at that point. “I think I should know them better… ”

Bien sûr![1] Not only Cécile would love to see Lily again, I think I would enjoy talking to her some time!” She was sincere with her excitement. Élodie never stopped to consider about that cause, and now seeing Zoe so committed with that made her want to know more. Everything strong enough to move someone as smart as Zoe seemed to be should be worth.

But changing the subject…

"So, what's your favorite and least favorite thing about Hogwarts so far?"

“Ah… j’adore[2] how many people is around here, though it is because of the Tournament, naturellement[3]. And the school is sooo big! Many of my colleagues think the castle is ugly and tacky, but I think it is cozy and romantic! And this view.” She turned to the lake, gesturing the sky still grayish, but beautiful, reflected on the lake. “It is inspiring, that is why I was dancing, I dance when I am inspired…”

Now, the least favorite thing was harder to tell, mostly because Lola avoided to thing negatively or create any kind of useless animosity. Part of her natural politics. “There are… some people… that do not really seem to like mixing, you know? And, ah! Some of your professors are a little scary. Your headmaster… is a little strange too. But this can be just a wrong impression!”

Lola shook her head with a smile, a forget-about-it kind of gesture. What could she tell, being there for so little?

“And you, Zoe? You are here for some years now, what do you think about Hogwarts and people here? Do you have many friends?”
 1. For sure!
 2. I love
 3. naturally

Zoe had no idea Lola didn't fully understand her. She made no signs of this, and Zoe wasn't a Legilimen. How was she supposed to know that the French had different understandings of English than her Hogwarts classmates even while they could hold a steady conversation? It was probably best that Lola didn't understand, as Zoe was making a rather rude stereotype of Beaxubaton students.

Not only Lola guaranteeing Cici's intrest but also Lola stating her own intrest to talk to Lily excited Zoe. She was quite tempted to pull out her two-way mirror and contact the elf right that second, but knew that would be rude. She would just send a letter to Lily later with Rufus, who had luckily arrived that morning. Though she wanted to burst with happiness she just gave Lola a large smile and continued to calmly pet Snowy.

The young witch was able to identify the word 'adore' and the other word sounded like natural, so for the sentence context she figured it was probably naturally. But her comments about the school is what surprised Zoe the most. She figured most Beaxubatons with their noses high in the air wouldn't like Hogwarts, but Lola had her own opinion. Her dislikes were also understandable and surprisingly did not include the manners of her classmates. This girl was different, but Zoe liked this kind of different.

"Well Lola, I like Hogwarts. It's like a second home, you know?" Zoe began when asked her own opinion. "I have a group of people I'm friendly with, but my best friend is defidently Ayla Collins. She's a fourth-year Hufflepuff. I can understand how some of our professors can be scary, Professor Storm for a good example. But if you are nice and try your best in class it's not that bad. And don't worry, I can promise you that Headmaster Reid is a lot better than last year's headmaster. There are some parts of Hogwarts I don't like, such as most of the Slytherin house. I won't single anyone out. Hopefully someone will break the Slytherin stereotype in my head and surprise me."

Zoe looked Lola over again before adding, "Like you Lola. From what my mother told me and my aunt's attitude I expected everyone from Beaxubaton to be stuck-up snobs who only care about manners and who judge others on their manners. You just told me that most of your classmates thought that this school was ugly and tacky, which kind of proves my point." Zoe smirked slightly as she said this, though quickly went back to what she was trying to say. "But you're different Lola. I like that. Would you like to be friends?" Though Zoe never had asked someone to be her friend like this since Ayla, she felt that this was the right time for something like this. It might very well be the only time she found a decent Beaxubaton girl to be friends with.

She found Zoe’s visions, opinions and tips about Hogwarts quite interesting. That could definitely be useful to Lola, as the girl seemed to be smart and, naturally, knew the school very well. The French witch would probably start asking a hundred questions on her lively, energetic way if Zoe didn’t add the last part. Her questions could wait. The girl’s sincere and spontaneous opinions about her were not only lovely, causing Lola to look at her honestly flattered and astonished, but they were also very important. No matter how confident and secure she seemed to be, hearing that, even from a younger girl she just met, would always be a wonderful thing.

“Suuuure, Zoe!” She answered emphatically, with a huge smile on her face. “We can be friends and go to Hogsmeade along in some weekend and you can tell me everything about Hogwarts! Ah, and you and Lily should definitely meet my sister sometime. Definitely! You remind me her sooo much!” That was true, Cécile’s sweet, dedicate, smart and sometimes surprisingly spontaneous and strong way was something she could identify on Zoe for some reason.

“But look, not all Beauxbatons are like this.” She started to clarify, and there was proud on her words. Not a childish vanity, a shallow pride, but truly proud for her school and her friends. “You should meet some of my friends as well, Corey, Jay, though I must warn you that Jay is a little… how do you call it? Wooer? He thinks he exudes Love Potion and sometimes it works. But he has a beautiful heart.” She laughed during all the description. Even not being so close to him, she could state the last part for sure. There were another friends she truly liked, but still she should face that, yes, they wouldn’t go around socializing with anyone nor approve what she was doing. But being that the time of her life to do that - in France her mother would always knew and put herself between Lola and anyone else who wasn’t Pureblood -, she would enjoy it as much as she can.

“But tell me, what do you like to study? You seem to be very smart, and you are wearing… the bleu house… Ravenclaw, isn’t it? What do you think about the houses? We do not have this in France; it is all new for me. I would not like it, it would put me and my sister away, you know. I think she would go to a house like yours, I would be… I think that lion’s house… Gryff… Gryffindor? But I am not sure…” Lola shrugged and gesticulated on a funny and relaxed way, unaware she was rambling.

Lola's excitement seemed to at least double Zoe's. She couldn't help but smile back and laugh a little. "I'd be happy to go with you to Hogsmeade. I want to take you to The Three Broomsticks, you have to try the butterbeer there. And Honeydukes, they have the best candy selection for witches and wizards in all of Britian!" It was funny that Zoe reminded Lola of her sister, because honestly Lola reminded Zoe of Ayla! All that energy and friendliness and those questions.

It made Zoe happy that Lola knew other people who were, in Zoe's opinion, anomalies. "I can handle someone hitting on me Lola. Some forth year sort of did over the summer, but only because his older friend made him," she added with a small smile. "Anyway, I've only got a few months until the Yule Ball, and I'm trying to find a foreign guy to take me. I haven't found anyone at Hogwarts I like. I know most of the tournament people are older than me, but my mom and dad are eleven years apart, so age in the end shouldn't matter too terribly much." Her biggest worry was finding someone she actually wanted to go to the Yule Ball with, not someone she chose last minute to not be alone. That would be a little tricky, since she was slightly picky with her guys.

The question flood gates opened and Zoe soon found herself given sentence after sentence ending with question marks with little time to think between. "Slow down!" Zoe said laughing. "In a way I like to study. I like school and learning, though if I didn't have to have my nose in a textbook for hours at a time I would gladly choose that. But grades are very important to me so I do. This book is my Herbology textbook," she held up the book as she said this, lowering it as she continued.

"I am in Ravenclaw the blue and bronze house," Zoe added to what Lola had said earlier. "The Ravenclaw house's main trait is intelligence. There is also Hufflepuff, the house of the badger and yellow and black, which prizes loyalty. Slytherin, house colors green and silver, house animal snake, the valuable trait there ambition. And finally, Gryffindor, house animal lion, house of red and gold. If you think you'd be placed there you must be rather brave. Of course, there are many other traits for each house, but listed them would take too long." The young witch was pleased with herself for being able to help out Lola learn about Hogwarts. It was great for someone from France to be taking this intrest in the old castle and what it held inside.

"I'd be happy to go with you to Hogsmeade. I want to take you to The Three Broomsticks, you have to try the butterbeer there. And Honeydukes, they have the best candy selection for witches and wizards in all of Britian!"

“Oh, but I did tried the butterbeer there already! It is awesome! I wish there were places in France like that, I would be there every weekend. And by this I mean it is never too much to go there! We will go together, and Cici will enjoy so much to refill her stock of Honeydukes’ candies!” That made Lola miss the Hogsmeade time. Now it would happen only in some weekends. At least would be better to enjoy the visit, she would be with real new friends.

"I can handle someone hitting on me Lola. Some forth year sort of did over the summer, but only because his older friend made him. Anyway, I've only got a few months until the Yule Ball, and I'm trying to find a foreign guy to take me. I haven't found anyone at Hogwarts I like. I know most of the tournament people are older than me, but my mom and dad are eleven years apart, so age in the end shouldn't matter too terribly much."

"I cannot believe he did it only because his older friend made him. He sure had truly enjoyed it. You are such a beautiful young lady! Listen, I will try to find a fine gentleman to take you to the ball, but I am still waiting to pick one to take me as well. I like older boys too, but there is no student older than me no more." Lola rolled her eyes, without caring about her little confusion with words. The idea was clear. At least she thought it was. “I want to find a guy who makes me laugh at least, so the ball can be fun. But I do not mind go alone either. It is modern times, oui?”

Her description about Hogwart’s houses made Lola suddenly get a little thoughtful. It wasn’t much different from what she had already heard, though she really had forgotten some little details already. “Ah… yeah, I think Cici could be a Ravenclaw as you are, and I could be a brave lion! Like rooarr!” She gesticulated with her hands like fake claws before laugh. She didn’t mind making a fool of herself sometimes and often didn’t really look like a silly dork exactly because of that. Her posture and confidence giving all a different tone to her jokes. “No, kidding, I think also we both could be placed in Hufflepuff. Though people does not seem to like Hufflepuff much, I do not know why.”

“But tell me, Zoe, how you do not get lost in the castle? I mean, it is so hard to remember all the ways there!”

A deep blush slowly spread through Zoe's face as Lola called her beautiful, as well as her offering to help Zoe find a guy. So Lola was looking for the funny type. Zoe didn't know the older years of her school very well, but she was sure she may be able to try to find someone to offer. "I guess you can go alone. But with Ayla as my friend, if I don't find a guy on my own there is little doubt in my mind she'll hook me up. I'm a bit picky with my guys but since I'm not picking my future husband or anything I'll try to lower my standards," Zoe said with a small laugh.

There was little the young witch could do from cracking up when Lola did the lion impression. It took her a few seconds to stop laughing, and she quickly went back to listening to Lola. "Well I think it comes from the fact that the founder of Hufflepuff would take anyone into her house and, if I got the right information, she took those who the other houses didn't want. I'm sure she had prefer qualities, but I think that's why. People probably expect them to be weak or misfits. But my best friend is a Hufflepuff, and my dad was a Hufflepuff, and Hufflepuff was always the house I'd want to be second to Ravenclaw. I know it's a good house." It was true, Zoe thought that if she hadn't been put in Ravenclaw she would have been a Hufflepuff. She was loyal to friends and very hardworking, as well as largely believed in justice and fairness. Zoe thought she had most of the qualities of a Hufflepuff.

Zoe gave a small laugh to Lola's next question. "Trial and error Lola, trial and error. When I first got to Hogwarts I got easily lost, but then by my second year I had figured out where everything was." Though the young witch had gotten lost, she never had been tardy for a class, though many times gotten to a class out of breath and tired.

“Oh no, Zoe, we are not picking husbands! Dieu merci[1]! We are too young to that!” Lola stated firmly, sighing a little thoughtful at the end. She was having the luck of not being forced to marry just because her mother’s dreams for her were different – ballerinas couldn’t fall in love, ballerinas couldn’t have a family, they just didn’t have time to that. Cécile, on the other hand, were suffering in silence because of that crazy idea of an arranged marriage… but Lola won’t let her do that. Non non non… “Ah, this Ayla, your friend, she seems to be interesting… when we go to the Three Broomsticks, you should invite her to come together!” She added quickly, so Zoe wouldn’t find strange her moment of silence. At least she hoped.

"…But my best friend is a Hufflepuff, and my dad was a Hufflepuff, and Hufflepuff was always the house I'd want to be second to Ravenclaw. I know it's a good house."

“Yes, it must be a house of great hearted people! I like that…” Though maybe Lola would still prefer to be sorted Gryffindor if she attended Hogwarts. She didn’t know how she would deal with the thought of being accepted on a house because no other wanted her. Not that she was sure that was a kind of real criteria (or lack of it) or anything, but the thought was bad enough. Well, she would have to handle. Knowing that great people were there would be relieving, as Zoe knew about her father and friend. She was a luck girl. The little Lola knew about her father was that he wasn’t great and definitely wouldn’t have been sorted Hufflepuff.

The next subject came to make Lola laugh again. “Oh Dieu, I think I will be tardy for some classes for a good time!” And not only because she would get lost, but because she was likely to lose sense of time when working out. Not something Zoe needed to know. If the girl was really anything like Cici, she would be terrified with her and she didn’t want it happening so quickly.

A small and heavy raindrop fell on Lola’s arm and she looked up. “The rain is coming… I think it is a good time for us to find our way back to the castle…” The grey clouds seemed to be greyer now and she quickly got up, offering a hand to help Zoe if she needed. She had her book and Snowy to protect and Lola was there to help in any case. “We should walk back together; actually, it would be easier for both of us! Where is your next class?”
 1.  Thank God

Zoe nodded. She truely thought that the Hufflepuff house was the house of the best hearted people, overall. She couldn't say individually. Her mother was one of the nicest people she knew, willing to heal absolutly anyone but she was a Ravenclaw. Still, the combination of the main traits of the house being loyalty and justice and the fact that it was founded on anyone being welcomed into the house and treated the same really gave Zoe respect for the house.

A small laugh came from Zoe with Lola's comment about her garenteed tardiness. "The important thing is to find the way to the classes of the strict professors first, then you can worry about the nicer ones," she said with another laugh. "It's the safest plan. I can give you a list of the stricter professors if needed."

Something wet hit Zoe's head, proving what Lola said was true. She got to her feet herself, not noticing Lola's hand, and tucked the book into her robe. "Oh, my next class isn't until after lunch. I have a study break at eleven, but nothing until then." Feeling another drop of rain, Zoe snapped her fingers at Snowy to get her attention. "Let's go," the young witch once again addressed Lola. With that she started off towards the castle, Snowy running ahead. "Don't worry, after a while she'll stop and wait for us."

Élodie frowned a little when Zoe ignored the hand she offered. But her natural manners after that proved that was just lack of attention – maybe she just didn’t see it. So the French girl just shrugged at the end and smiled at Zoe, “I might meet my sister soon; we will try to study before lunch.” Actually, Cécile would really study would Lola would try… Hear Cici’s explanations after was much more helpful anyway. Discuss the subjects with her was much more interesting than read books and write essays.

"Let's go. Don't worry, after a while she'll stop and wait for us."
