Lexus entered her apartment and closed the front door behind her. The lights were out which meant Lucas hadn't returned home yet. She sighed, waving her wand and brought light to the quaint two bedroom apartment they shared. As she moved to the kitchen, she released her long raven hair from the braided crown she kept in it while working. It had been a long day at the Hospital, had it been twelve or sixteen hours? She couldn't be sure but she was making a difference and that's all that mattered. She had a day off coming up and she had convinced Lucas to take some time off from the Academy, she was going to finally introduce him to
Thanksgiving even though they were a few days late to have spent the holiday with family.
She searched the fridge for something to heat up for dinner, neither of them were great cooks nor were they home often enough to worry about old fashioned home cooked meals. More often than not they ordered in. Lexus dug a not quite yet stale piece of pizza out of a box and shuffled into the livingroom. She glanced out of the enchanted window. It was currently displaying a winter landscape somewhere up north, a deer grazing in the midst of bare trees. Living in the Under, it was standard for apartments to come with such enchantments, given the fact that the entire Wizarding city was located a few hundred feet underneath Toronto.
As she swallowed the final bite of the cold pizza there was a knock at the door. She rose to her feet with a smirk and a shake of her head, "Don't tell me you lost your keys again," She called out to whom she had assumed was her husband. However as she opened the door she was greeted by two Wizards. One was instantly recognizable as her Uncle, the other was the Head Administrator of the Auror Academy Lucas worked at.
"Can we come in Lex?" Her uncle asked though both had moved into the apartment before she gave a response. She looked to her uncle confused. He was living in London now, the Canadian Ambassador for the Ministry of Magic there. She knew that his job required him to regularly travel between the two countries but that didn't explain what he was doing in her house. The Administrator hadn't spoke, he simply moved into her kitchen and started brewing some tea.
"What's up Uncle Joe?" She tried to keep the worry out of her voice but her chest was starting to tighten. Something in her gut was telling her that this wasn't a social call and there was something else. Something she wasn't allowing herself to admit. Her enhanced senses courtesy of her Lycanthrope curse was picking up the faint smell of blood.
"Maybe you should sit down." He guided her to the couch and she reluctantly sat on the edge. Neither spoke until the Administrator handed her a cup of tea.
"What's going on?"
"There was an attack at the Academy." The dark Administrator had a deep voice that echoed his complexion,
"A group calling themselves WALI claims to be responsible."Lexus swallowed a lump in her throat that felt like a ball of screws and nodded, "Wizards Against the Lycanthrope Invasion. I've heard of them. A ridiculous Anti Werewolf group. One of Lucas' former students started it."
The Administrator gave her a solemn look but offered no other emotion. Lexus realized the faint smell of blood that tickled the back of her mind was coming from him,
"Emerson Hardwick. He led the attack." Lexus felt her skin crawl and freeze at the same time, she felt antsy and exhausted, eager to move but unable to to even breathe. Hardwick had been a trouble student for Lucas and years past, before Lexus had even been dating him, Lucas had expelled Hardwick from the Academy for his radical views. In turn Hardwick had attacked him for being Pro Werewolf. For a moment none of them spoke as Lexus wrestled to find her voice. When she finally did it was little more than a whisper, "Where's Lucas?"
"Lexus-"Lexus leapt from the couch succumbing to the anger that always seemed to sit under the surface ever since her first transformation, "Where the hell is my husband?!"
"Hardwick's attack was a success," The lack of emotion in the large man's voice was driving her anger even more,
"Several students were injured and there were twelve casualties in all. Auror Hunter succumbed to his injuries on the way to the Hospital."Lexus wasn't aware that she had dropped but when she felt her Uncle's arm around her she was on the floor of her livingroom, the mug of tea shattered next to her. She was only vaguely aware that the hot liquid had splashed onto her Healer Robes,
"I'm so, so sorry Lex . . . Lucas is dead."
