Roleplay Guidelines

At Absit Omen, each writer controls a character they create and takes turns with other writers making posts in threads to tell a story together.

Formatting
  • Do your best with spelling, grammar, etc. (All writing levels welcome.)
  • Write in 3rd Person Past Tense: “Harry picked up his wand and wiped off the troll boogers.”
  • Use the default text color and size for the role-playing post itself.

Images
  • Avatars and signature images are optional. These features may be accessed by modifying your account profile.
  • Avatars are a photo or drawing of your character. More information at the Avatar Registry.
  • You can add signatures to the end of each of your posts. Signatures may include images and text with an overall size no larger than 600x300px.

Role-playing
  • Only control the actions, reactions, speech, or thoughts of your own character. Leave space for other writers to respond.
  • Your character only has access to information they would have reason to know.
  • Take turns and be patient. If a thread has more than a few characters, sometimes posting ‘out of turn’ makes sense.
  • In-character actions have in-character consequences. Be cognizant of how your character’s actions could affect other characters, too.
  • There is no min or max post length. Write a lot, write a little, but write enough that other writers have something to respond to.
  • If a thread is marked [Open] anyone is welcome to jump in at any time. If a thread is marked with a specific character name [Virgil]; that thread’s meant only for them. Otherwise, just ask!

Writing Threads
At Absit Omen, threads are grouped by location. Threads that take place in London are in the London boards.

Dates can be noted in brackets or parentheses before the thread title, at the top of the first post in the thread, and/or by using tags. When starting a new thread, pick a day in the current timeline (check the AO Calendar in the sidebar of the main site). Threads that take place before 2008 go in the Pensieve, usually.

Thread titles can be anything you like. If the thread is open for anyone, add [Open] to the title. (And post a link in the Open Thread Directory, if you like.)

Courtesy
Be patient and communicate. If you are waiting on a post from another writer, it’s okay to send them a message to check in. It’s not okay to wheedle or guilt for a response.

All posts can be edited. If something happens that stops the fun, it can always be changed. Misunderstandings happen.

“Yes, and...” is a good strategy for role-playing. ‘Yes’ means going with what the other writer has set up. ‘And’ means adding more action.
