Some character types at Absit Omen have some clarifying guidelines.

Writing characters outside of your own identity

Writers are absolutely welcome to write characters of a different identity than their own in terms of race, ethnicity, disability, gender, religion, nationality, or sexuality.

At Absit Omen, we are trying to make better efforts in creating an environment where people of identities marginalized by white western society feel more welcome, and part of that is emphasizing the importance of writing outside of your own experiences with sensitivity and accuracy.

To that end, if this applies to you, please consider some resources we've put together as you create and write your character. Curators may have additional questions or critiques during character review along these lines and we hope you'll be receptive.

Hogwarts Students - (form)

  • Hogwarts students all reside in the United Kingdom and Ireland. (Students outside of the U.K./Ireland may have attended magical school in another country. Please see the Schools page for more guidance).
  • Only magical human students may attend - no Squibs, Muggles, or non-humans.
  • No transfer, exchange students or late-starts.
  • First, Second, Third, Fourth and Sixth Year students are currently open for play.  (Fifth and Seventh Years are NPCs.)
  • Calculate your student's year and birthday with the Hogwarts Year Calculator.

Hogwarts Staff - (form)

  • Professors should be at least 30 years old, and be qualified in their field.
  • Most Hogwarts professors were educated at Hogwarts themselves. Professors from abroad are capped at 3.
  • Hogwarts professors are encouraged to start interactive threads such as classes, club activities, meetings, or other interactive activities throughout the school year.

Creatures & Magical Beings - (form)

All kinds of magical creatures are available to play in Absit Omen!  Those wishing to write a creature character should be sure to conform to both Harry Potter canon as well as details established as AO canon.

Goblins  |  Giants  |  House Elves  |  Ghosts

Purebloods

  • Pureblood: Both parents and family “as far back as anyone can remember” are magical.
  • Halfblood: At least one parent is magic, but there is a Muggle or Muggleborn in the recent family tree.
  • Muggleborn: Both parents are muggles.
Remember, blood purity definitions are societal constructions and not exact.

New pureblooded characters need to be related to an already establish AO or HP Canon pureblooded family.  Once you have created your pureblood character, we can help you find a connection.  Check out the AO Pureblood Families page to see a list of current families!

Canon Characters

  • Canon characters are welcome at Absit Omen!
  • Canons should not contradict previously existing information about them, coordinating with both the HP canon and any AO canon.
  • The events of the Epilogue of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows have not yet occurred (2019) and we are not obliged to head in that direction.
Canon Characters at Absit Omen - Characters not listed are open for play.  Inactive canon characters are adoptable.

Special Abilities - (form)

Characters may possess abilities or traits, both innate or the result of study, that are rare in the magical world.

  • Limit two abilities per character.
  • Some abilities have a site-wide cap.
  • Anyone can attempt to study a skill. Once your character gets proficient, you’ll need to fill out the form.
  • Writers are expected to communicate with each other when exercising these abilities on a character - for example, if Legilimency or Veela Charm is used on a character, their writer needs to have given consent.

Special Titles  - (form)

  • Special titles are leadership roles, awards or honoraries earned in-character.
  • See what's currently available at the Cast of Characters.

Special Titles at Hogwarts
These characters are expected to be duly qualified in-character, and in good academic and disciplinary standing. Any gender may apply, meaning prefects may be any gender, for example.
  • Staff: Deputy Headmaster, Heads of House
  • Students: Head students, prefects, student club presidents, quidditch captains

Other Special Titles
  • Order of Merlin: An award of great honor, bestowed by the Ministry of Magic for great services to the Wizarding World. The bearer must have performed a feat most generous, courageous or benevolent. First Class, Second Class and Third Class are awarded according to height of prestige.
  • Member of the Wizengamot: Revered members of society with a reputation for fairness, good judgment, and deep understanding of Wizarding Law that comes with substantial age and experience.

Adopt a Character
Absit Omen members frequently outline characters they'd like to see in the role-play and offer them up for another writer to adopt and write as their own.
Unless otherwise arranged, an adopted character can be re-adopted out if the previous writer leaves AO.  Generally, the original creator of the character 'owns' the character and is allowed to decide who adopts their characters.
