Unregistered Werewolf Murdered
by Karina Abdul Mutallib
29th August 1999

The body of Surrey tradesman Anthony Layton, 47, was discovered yesterday morning in the wizarding enclosure of South Surrey Park by two young witches. Recent graduates of Hogwarts, Melissa Paine and her companion Hera Bundyroot had arrived early in the morning for a picnic and a swim in the pond.

Their cheerful outing took a turn for the horrific when the girls noticed a hunched figure sat under the shade of a nearby tree with his hands tied behind his back. The authorities were promptly contacted.

A representative from the Department of Magical Law Enforcement has confirmed that Mr. Layton was an unregistered werewolf, citing silver burns on his palms and back as initial evidence. No further information has been released. However, one of the two primary witnesses has hinted that the body was in a state of undress and had obviously been subject to torture.

When reached for comment, the department asserted that they are not at liberty to discuss details of an ongoing investigation. Members of the public who have information regarding these events are encouraged to report to the Ministry of Magic.

Anthony Layton will be buried with his late wife, Tabitha, in Brookwood Cemetery, Woking. He is survived by his son, Jebediah Layton, currently abroad.

Ballentyne to Lead Werewolf Wing
1 Jan 2012 - Iona Ballentyne has been named the new head of the Werewolf Wing. The Werewolf Wing was established in 2008 under then head of the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures and all matters concerning werewolves and werewolf registration was moved there. Ballentyne will now oversee the Werewolf Registry, Werewolf Capture Unit, and other werewolf support services. Ballentyne comes to the post with 22 years of experience in the Werewolf Capture Unit, some time of it as the unit’s chief. She left the Ministry of Magic in 2008, and returned this December in the new job.

Falmouth Leads, Tutshill Trails
3 Jan 2012 - Last year’s champions Tutshill Tornadoes have settled in the bottom of the league after ten rounds of play earning only two victories against Kenmare and Wimbourne. In the opposite turn of fate, the Falmouth Falcons have returned to its tradition of brutal domination following last year’s crushing standing at second to last. They sit just ahead of Puddlemere. The Chudley Cannons find themselves in the middle of the pack just behind Ballycastle, but have the entire rest of the season to find their home at the bottom.

Floo Network Malfuctions Under Investigation
5 Jan 2012 - Reports of the Floo Network ejecting passengers at unexpected destinations have come in over the past few weeks. Autorities at the Department of Magical Transportation have reason to believe these malfuctions are related to the Magical Measles outbreak.

“It’s like a bee flying up your nose. You’re just not going to be able to go about your day, now are you? If you can’t cast a spell, stay out of the hearth. Please!”

Hogwarts Copes with Magical Measles
10 Jan 2012 - About thirty Hogwarts students and staff have come down with Praecantatio Deliquus, also known as Magical Measles, and are being held in isolation in an attempt to contain the illness. St. Mungo’s healer Elixia Mordent is on site to care for the sick. St. Mungo Hospital reports that the current treatment protocol is ameliorating the flu-like symptoms.

Squibs Stage Protest
15 Jan 2012 - A gathering of 200 people occupied the plaza  in front of Gringotts Bank in Diagon Alley to protest the growing rumors that squibs are responsible for the mysterious Pracantatio Deliquus epidemic where magical folk lose the ability to lose magic. Members of SQUEAL (Squib Union for Equality and Liberation) were joined by magical allies. The protestors demanded the Ministry of Magic take immediate action to quash the conspiracy theories and prosecute discrimination against squibs.

Ollivanders Robbed, Thief in Custody
22 Jan 2012 - Ollivanders in Diagon Alley was robbed yesterday after closing time. The theif, one Norman Shufflebottom, was apprehended at the scene. Aurors were assisted by local hero Donnan McBoid. Tamzin Ollivander, niece of shop owner Garrick Ollivander, was in the shop at the time of the robbery and sustained only minor injuries. Estimated property damage valued at over three thousand galleons, primarily in damage to wands. Shufflebottom is known to Magical Law Enforcement and is suspected in a string of other similar crimes.[1]

Knockturn Body Identified; Vampires Suspected
by Salvatore Rowenstaff
29 Dec 1984

The name of the witch whose body was discovered in Knockturn Alley has been released: Fortuna Sangwine, 20-years-old of Bristol.

As previously reported Ms Sangwine was reported missing by her flatmates on the 24th of December when she didn’t return home from an evening out on the night of the 22nd. The Magical Law Patrol with help from the community found a body matching Ms Sangwine’s description at the abandoned Grimshaw building in Knockturn Alley on the Christmas Day and was subsequently identified by her family.

During a press conference held by the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, the mysterious manner of death was revealed - all of Ms Sangwine’s blood was missing, but there was not a mark on her. Her wand and some jewelry have not been located.

“It could still be vampires,” said a representative of the Being Division of the Department for the Regulation and Contorl of Magical Creatures, Caldonia Clearwater. “I know the rumors are swirling and I regret to say we can’t rule it out. Just because we can’t find the bite marks doesn’t mean they weren’t there. Who else could it be? What else would do that? Vampires are, after all, highly unpredictable. Except when they are.”

Further compounding the theory that Ms. Sangwine is dead by vampire attack is that she was missing during the new moon. Immediately following the press conference the Daily Prophet was bombarded with demands that a vampire investigation should be done immediately.

“The public should avoid confrontation with vampires as much as possile. In fact, that’s a good rule for any day of the week,” said Clearwater.

“Rest assured we’ll be investigating every angle,” was the comment from MLE. “We won’t tolerate vampires just picking off our youth willy-nilly. Also other theories, sure.”

Magic-Stifling Illness Spreading
by Niobe Thursby
3 January 2012

St. Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries is confirming the existence of the rumored ‘magical measles’, a mysterious illness spreading among wizarding folk. Those affected experience flu-like symptoms but more importantly the complete inability to perform any magic at all.

“We’ve never seen anything like it before, and don’t call it that. Alliteration aside, it has nothing to do with the measles,” said Miranda Storm, Head Healer. The official name is Praecantatio Deliquus and it is a totally new phenomenon.

“We are working hard to find a cure, but currently the malady appears to be running its course.”

St. Mungo’s informs the Daily Prophet that Praecantatio Deliquus has not been linked to contact with squibs. A representative from SQUEAL (Squib Union for Equality and Liberation)  says the false connection is deeply problematic.

“This vicious rumor will only serve to further ostracize and marginalize the non-magical community. We are just as much a part of magicul culture as anyone else. Perhaps this epidemic will give magicfolk at least a brief insight into what squibs go through. Honestly,” said Jocelyn Poe.

Thus far, St. Mungo’s has no treatment for the condition, but it does seem to clear up in two to three weeks. “Plenty of fluids, avoid any magical remedies, and exercise caution around enchantments. As yet, we don’t have a lot of information about how magic affects the ailing.”

There have been no fatalities attributed to Praecantatio Deliquus, but some injuries have been reported.

“It is contagious! Bugger, almost forgot to say. It’s contagious. Please visit St. Mungo’s if you begin to experience flu-like symptoms or get spat out by the Floo. Then be sure isolate yourself as much as possible.”

Lost Hiker Found
26 Dec 2011 Missing witch Cornelia Farthing of Devonshire has been found alive and by most measures intact. Farthing had been reported missing three days ago when she did not return from an herbological hike in the Lake District. "I ought've stayed home," said Farthing. "I had the sniffles and must have gotten so woozy that I couldn't manage to Apparate. Oddest thing ... still feeling under the weather..."

Diagon Alley Portal Glitches
21 Dec 2011 Just in time for last-minute shopping the brick portal entrance to Diagon Alley via the Leaky Cauldron is being picky and choosy about whom it allows passage. It's sure to cause some consternation but the Floo Network Authority is on the case. "Don't know why we've got strapped with this but sure, we're on the case," said George Higgins from that office.

Catch a shooting star
12 Dec 2011 Did you see the shooting star last night? Multiple readers reported the rare and pretty event of a brilliant sparkly streak of light quickly flying over London. "This is a good omen for Sagittarius who can consider the green color symbolic of growth and renewal," said staff astrologer Abe Castor-on-Lune.
Werewolf sighted in London Zoo
12 Dec 2011 According to a close-mouthed internal source inside the Werewolf Wing there may or may not have been at least one werewolf but no more than two werewolves reported in the vicinity of the London zoo or possibly within the London zoo. The source is neither confirming or denying that the werewolf, whom the source will only confirm is hypothetical, was collected by the Werewolf Capture Unit, but that if it were or weren't that werewolf should it exist is being looked after according to protocol.

Pamphlets distributed by the Werewolf Wing to the Daily Prophet when asked for comment included common sense precautions for being safe on a full moon and directions for casting Red Sparks should an emergency arise.

Vanessa Carson Robbed
20 Dec 2011 Musician and model Vanessa Carson was the victim of a robbery on the 18th of December.[1] A source close to Carson tells the Daily Prophet the young star suffered no injuries. The Department of Magical Law Enforcement has stated they are not yet ready to conclusively link this incident to this autumn's string of burglaries.[2]

December 2011 / [Dec 20] Leo Gamp Cleared of Charges

April 11, 2019, 08:20:17 AM

Leo Gamp cleared of charges
by Niobe Thursby
20 December 2011

The Wizengamot has cleared ex-Auror Leo Gamp of all charges and has been released from Azkaban with the court’s apologies.

Gamp through his lawyer Enid Jingleberry requested a review of his 1998 conviction for murder, kidnapping, and treason citing prosecutorial misconduct, in particular that the material evidence presented was fabricated.

Following the decision, Gamp had this to say:

“I am…relieved that the Wizengamot was willing to hear my case a second time, and that they showed the good judgement to reverse what was clearly an unjust verdict thirteen years ago.  But I don’t know that you can call this justice, not after so long.”

Jingleberry added:

“Mr Gamp has lost over a quarter of his life to an Azkaban sentencing he never deserved. Mr Gamp is a father who has cruelly never had the chance to love his son. Nothing will ever change that, but we won’t be letting the Wizengamot off with a mere brush off. This needs to be prevented from happening again.”

Jingeberry cites the testimony of Theodora Kingstreet as the linchpin of the case. Kingstreet was convicted of various charges in 1998, not the least of which was conspiring with Death Eaters and treason. These crimes were determined to have occurred during the time she was the lead prosecutor on the Gamp case.

An anonymous source inside the Wizeganmot told the Daily Prophet that the exoneration of Gamp’s case throws into question every one of Kingstreet’s cases from that time. Time will tell if more petitions for conviction reviews will be coming.

Grants Sentenced in Werewolf Attacks
by Niobe Thursby
17 December 2011

Iain and Annabel Grant of Aberfoyle, Scotland, have been found guilty. On the 16th of December the Wizengamot convicted the Grants of seven counts of willfully violating Codes of Werewolf Law resulting in the death of a muggle and the injury of two others.

The Grants chose not to submit their daughter (referred to as Jane to protect her privacy) to the Werewolf Registry following her succumbing to the Lycanthropy curse 2009. Instead, the Grants pulled Jane from Hogwarts and attempted to contain her transformations in their cellar. She escaped and was found to have caused the casualties.

The charges were lowered from The Department of  Magical Law Enforcement’s initial indictment of one count of murder, two counts of bodily harm caused to a Muggle (colloquially known as Muggle-baiting). Instead of lengthy sentences in Azkaban, the Grants were ordered to relinquish custody of both of their children and pay restitution.

Solomon Carstairs, Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, seemed satisfied with the conclusion.

"The DMLE is pleased to note that Miss Grant's parents will be relieved child custody," he remarked when reached for comment, "and forced to rethink their actions. We believed that this result is in the best interest of public and individual safety."

Jane Grant will be immediately added to the Werewolf Registry and return to Hogwarts in January.

The Wizengamot may have been swayed towards these lowered charges by sympathetic witnesses and the surprise turnabout of the head of the Werewolf Capture Unit Kurby Bagnold.

The Werewolf Capture Unit, part of the Werewolf Wing in the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, has jurisdiction to investigate and intervene in any case where a werewolf may be in violation of Codes of Werewolf Law, after which point the case is handed to the MLE for prosecution. Following this, agents of the WCU are often called to testify to the facts of the case for the prosecution.

However, when Bagnod was cross-examined by the Grant’s defense lawyer Harper Graves, he advocated for leniency. Wizengamot transcripts cite him as saying that the matter was “solved” with the capture and control of Jane Grant, so the Grants should not face punishment in Azkaban. He also expressed understanding that the Grants chose not to register their daughter as required by law, in effect, agreeing with the defenses other witnesses.

When asked for comment, Bagnold responded: “No comment.”

Other witnesses for the defense included Wizengamot Elder (recused) Knox T. Greyfriar also Headmaster of Hogwarts and a werewolf himself, and noted lycanthropy scholar Maya Irene-Strangely.

Jane Grant has already been enrolled with the Werewolf Registry and will return to Hogwarts in January. The Grants may petition custody in three years.

Opinion: Reactions to the Grant Trial
18 December 2011 - Whether you asked for them or not.

More Like Werewolf Coddling Unit

I did not imagine that in my life I would read the preposterous news that the head of the Werewolf Capture Unit had become a lapdog! The Ministry of Magic’s soft-minded do-goodery has finally gone too far! I consider myself open minded, but the Grants and their daughter ought to be locked up for what they did. Since when do we value the lives of innocent Muggles, human-beings, less than those of criminals? Bagnold should be sacked! We need someone in his job who will do what needs to be done! What next? Daycare for direwolves? Get right! - Warwick Cesswick, Esq.

Think of the Children

I was surprised to read about the soft handling of the Grant case by both the Wizengamot and the WCU. How is it that the Grants aren't going to be facing time in Azkaban? Their behaviour clearly amounts to child abuse and we shouldn't tolerate it as a society! Who's to say that other parents won't be as reckless in hopes of being freed of their flea-ridden children? Very disappointed. I hope this doesn't set precedence. - Anonymous[1]

November 2011 / [Nov 10th] A Puzzling Predicament

A PUZZLING PREDICAMENT
by TEMPERANCE CARTWRIGHT

November 10th 2011

Early yesterday afternoon, The Department of Magical Law Enforcement released a press statement pertaining to the puzzling events of August[1], in which members of wizarding society were admitted to St.Mungo's with varying accounts of possession. The number of victims has since dropped, with most receiving intensive treatment and observation at the hospital.

"We believe that it is in the interest of public safety that everyone is made aware the supposed epidemic in August," disclosed department head Solomon Carstairs. "However, we are unable to comment on the source of the mysterious mist, as it is part of an ongoing investigation."

The statement went on to explain that the mist was formed as the result of the mass movement of pentrals. But what, readers, are pentrals? According to Ministry specialists, these formless entities are in fact disembodied souls who have been separated from their physical selves through the practice of Dark Magic. Their behaviours are unpredictable, and can range from benign to outright violent.

Pentrals have been likened to spirits or ghosts, and they are able to partly take possession of their hosts. The public is asked to immediately report to the DMLE should they seriously suspect anyone of attempting to create a pentral. This particular use of the Dark Arts is strictly prohibited.

The department warns that they have good reason to suspect that dementors are attracted by the presence of pentrals, and that this contributed to their congregation at St.Mungo's[2] last month.  They request that any perceived flocking of Dementors be promptly reported to I.D.R.E.A.D.

The Curious Case of Dementors at St. Mungo's
by Niobe Thursby
19 October 2011

LONDON - The most peculiar thing happened at St. Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries on the night of the 17th of October, just two nights ago. It all began when four Dementors were spotted in the skies of London headed towards the hospital. The Ministry of Magic’s Interdepartmental Dementor response team IDREAD was activated and within minutes Aurors, Obliviators, and agents from The Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures were on the scene with the task of driving away the dangerous beasts and preventing casualties.

The Dementors made a beeline to the hospital and began, with all urgency, to assail the building completely ignoring every wix outside.

“This was highly unusual,” said Quill Som, the head of the Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes. “Until that night, the only recorded motivation of Dementors was to attack human beings.”

Outside, IDREAD agents made every effort to drive the Dementors away, but their Patroni were only temporary deterrents.

“They just kept coming,” said Auror Zora Roh. “Nothing we did drove them off.”

At some point, two Dementors were able to enter the building.

“We found an open window on the fourth floor. Maybe someone used it to escape and left it open? No idea. It could have been catastrophic,” elaborated Roh.

An initial theory of the strange behavior had to do with disgraced Auror and current resident of St. Mungo’s Lawrence Musgrave. Details are sketchy, but sources within the Ministry tell us that his legal situation is murky and that his presence in the hospital is supervised in some way by the Department of Mysteries and concerns his peculiar relationship to Dementors.

“How in Merlin’s shiny drawers can you possibly think we’d comment on that,” comment courtesy of an Unspeakable.

However, Musgrave was reportedly relatively unharassed. Instead, the pair of Dementors were wholly focused on the majority of patients being evacuated to the safety of the hospital’s basement.

“It was horrifying,” said Healer Kai Moskowitz. “You could feel them coming and so many of our patients were totally unable to defend themselves. It made your soul just … sink. The frost crept under the doors. I’ll never forget it.”

And then, mysteriously, the Dementors fled the building. Reports from the different departments comprising IDREAD have given little solid evidence about what might have caused it, and St. Mungo’s reported only minor injuries.

“We have some theories. Maybe they got what wanted. Whatever that is,  I reckon the Department of Mysteries isn’t telling us something, but what else is new,” said Roh.

Quill Som elaborated on any outstanding threat to the public. “We’ll work as hard as we can to get to the bottom of this. We caution the public to maintain precautions and to continue to report any Dementor sightings with all haste. More answers forthcoming.”

“You’re kidding right?” said that same Unspeakable. “No comment.”

Suspicions Surround Azkaban Guard Death
by Niobe Thursby
23 November 2011

The body of Azkaban guard Gilgamesh Shahidi was found today by muggle hikers at the base of the Bempton Cliffs in Yorkshire. The Department of Magical Law Enforcement is considering the case suspicious and are investigating.

Shahidi, 41, was a guard at Azkaban prison for nearly twenty years and most recently was assigned to the Excessive Security Block where Wizarding Britain’s most dangerous inmates are housed.

Level Two has released few details, but the Daily Prophet has learned the body was found far from the base of the cliff. A single high heeled shoe was found nearby.

“We caution the public to be cautious, although really, what can we say? Keep away from cliffs.”

They went on to say that if anyone has any information regarding this incident to immediately contact the Department of Magical Law Enforcement.

Mr. Shahidi was known for having a sterling employment record at Azkaban, and is survived by his wife, four brothers, and two children. The family is requesting privacy at this time.

Not a Clear Cut Case
by Niobe Thursby
16 October 2011

In a few short weeks, the Wizengamot will again hear the case of Leo Gamp.

A former Auror, Leo Gamp was arrested in 1998 shortly after the Battle of Hogwarts on charges of murder, torture, and kidnapping. The arrest came as a shock to the Wizarding World, still reeling from the war. He’d had a clean record, and by all accounts was a decorated and respected member of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement.

Only months after his arrest, he was sentenced by the Wizengamot to life in Azkaban with no possibility of release.

Time-turn forward to today: Genevieve Garcia-Gamp, journalist and estranged wife of Leo Gamp, has just been informed that Gamp has been granted the opportunity to argue for early release, on grounds that his prosecution was bungled.

I sat down with Mrs. Garcia-Gamp to get a better picture of what’s going on.

Garcia-Gamp described a young Gamp as a wizard with,  “a career as an Auror ahead of him and a smile that every girl ogled over… he was smart, attentive and kind. He promised me the world.”

They eloped in 1989, Garcia-Gamp leaving Hogwarts early. She, like everyone else who knew Gamp, never saw the change coming.

“I’ve spent many nights over the years lying awake and going over every one of those final encounters with Leo. I’ve watched those memories and dissected them. People still question if I really was oblivious. Maybe it was stupidity. But I honestly can’t see or remember any signs and trust me I’ve tried,” Garcia-Gamp recollected.

But everything changed during Gamp’s trial. Garcia-Gamp described the threats from her husband:

“He tried to launch himself across the table at me. There was something really dark there that I never saw before. He called me an unfit mother.”

Since then, she has tried to move on with her life, raising her young son on her own, and building a flourishing business. She had to find out about the new developments from Gamp himself last Saturday, even though she’d been in contact with Solomon Carstairs, the Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement only a week before.

“As you can imagine, I was rather angry that no one from Level Two or the Ministry at all had contacted me in mere warning that this might happen.”

Garcia-Gamp looked for answers but felt she was met with a callous disregard, her career as an author and journalist apparently used as grounds to keep her in the dark.

She described how she was told that she, “should perhaps make more friends on Level Two.”

This is not the first time the Daily Prophet has become aware of personal bias in the DMLE against Mrs. Garcia-Gamp: earlier this month an investigation into a magical assault by a high-ranking Ministry of Magic official at Garcia-Gamp’s place of business yielded only a slap on the wrist.

Garcia-Gamp told the Daily Prophet that her only concern is the safety of her son, and that justice is done.

“If he’s released, he’ll be coming after my son and I won’t be able to do anything about it. My twelve-year-old boy caught in the middle and he’s not asked for any of this.” She added, “my son will be deeply affected by all of this.”

However, “... if there was uncontroversial proof, evidence that cleared his name beyond a shadow of a doubt, I will be the first to welcome him home as a free man.”

The Daily Prophet has conducted extensive research on Leo Gamp’s original trial, and at this point in time the most compelling evidence in Gamp’s favor was that the Ministry’s prosecuting attorney was none other than Theodora Kingstreet, who is currently serving a life sentence in Azkaban for her own crimes of murder and treason. Kingstreet had been found to be a capable forger and deft at manipulating the legal system. According to sources inside the Wizengamot, Gamp’s legal representation claims that any case related to Kingstreet is tainted and must be re-examined.

I asked her what she hopes will come of all this.

“I want to see the Ministry finally make a decision and then leave us all in peace to deal with the aftermath.... I’d like to say that I had every confidence in the Ministry to get it right. But, as I said, it’s damage limitation, isn’t it? Do they want to leave it as is, release a criminal, or admit they locked an innocent man up for more than a decade?”

Runespoors Wash Up on Thames
by Niobe Thursby
04 November 2011

In the early morning of the 2nd of November, the remains of seven dead Runespoor serpents were found on the shores of the Thames in East London.

According to the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, the serpents had been dead at most a fortnight, although the conditions in the river make it difficult to determine exactly how long ago.

"Regardless of how the public might feel about Runespoors," commented Balfour Spectre, head of Beasts Division, "we must bear in mind that the mistreatment of creatures is strictly illegal and inhumane."

The appearance of these Runespoor carcasses is a reminder that the illegal trade in Runespoors and Runespoor parts is still active in the black market. An interdepartmental effort ending in 2008 nearly put an end to most trade and resulted in multiple convictions. But by 2010, Runespoors began to again make an appearance in underground circles.

At time of publication, the origins of the Thames Runespoors are unknown.

BLOOD BANK BRIMMING AGAIN
by Temperance Cartwright
9th November 2011

St.Mungo's Hospital was pleased to report yesterday afternoon that their blood bank stores have been replenished to an acceptable level for the first time since supplies were stolen[1] earlier this year. This has been, in no small part, thanks to the many blood donations and drives[2] organised by both St.Mungo's and the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures.

"The vampire community is exceedingly grateful to know our provisions are no longer in danger of depletion," commented Tristan Vaillancourt, the department's consultant vampire. "I would like to personally thank every wizard and witch who donated their precious life blood," he added.

In spite of this good news, skeptics continue to voice their concerns regarding the muggle murders[3] that took place in March. The Department of Magical Law Enforcement has confirmed that the victims had been drained of their blood by one or more vampire perpetrators but a culprit has yet to be apprehended. It has been speculated that the deaths were a direct reaction to the rationing of blood bank supplies.

Mateo Amherst was briefly held in custody in May[4] but authorities were forced to release him due to lack of evidence. The newly turned vampire has also come under suspicion for the manslaughter of his former colleagues from the Department of Magical Cooperation.

When reached for comment, the DMLE assured members of the press that Amherst is still being investigated.

"In the meantime, we ask the public to maintain civil relations with our vampire communities," said Solomon Carstairs when asked for a statement. "Hate crimes[5] of any kind will not be tolerated and we encourage observers to immediately report suspicious behaviour."

Ward Your Doors: London Endures Streak of Robberies
by Niobe Thursby
6 NOV 2011

LONDON - There have been fourteen burglaries in the London area in the last three months, most recently a break-in at Pilpher & Strides Private Investigators in the early morning of the 3rd of November. At this point in the investigations, officials from the Department of Magical Law Enforcement cannot conclusively say they are related.

"Some of the robberies have some key details in common, but there is nothing to tie them all together."

According to Level Two, all robberies occurred late at night, some in private residences, others in small businesses. In some cases, the locations were thoroughly warded against intrusion.  Stolen items have included everything from valuables, relics and antiques, personal affects, and documents.

There has been only one witness[1], who suffered minor injuries. Level Two is not releasing a description of the attacker at this time.

Level Two is advising  magical communities in Greater London to take special precautions in locking up valuables.

"Don't attempt to confront the burglar yourselves, as we believe they could be dangerous. Instead, use Red Sparks to call for help. Report anything suspicions."

The Department of Magical Law Enforcement has pamphlets available to the public with instructions for warding against intrusion.

Remembering the End: 30 Years Since the End of the First War
by Barnabas Cuffe
October 23, 2011

This 31st of October will mark the 30th anniversary of the 1981 defeat of Lord Voldemort, and so too the anniversary of the end of much brutal fighting and the beginning of national mourning. The Daily Prophet wishes to mark these moments. Forge onward, dear readers, because those who don’t read to the end are doomed to repeat only headlines.

It all began, as many who live still remember, in 1970 when a wizard calling himself Lord Voldemort lead his followers, self-named Death Eaters, in open attacks upon muggles. What followed was a decade of increasing violence, and ever-matching (and eventually overpowering) resistance.

The Resistance

Thousands put their lives at risk to defy the death cult. Some did battle in open fields and in the streets, like and brave and loyal Aurors. Others lived their lives authentically and open, refusing to be diminished by bigotry. There were others who stepped into the shadows and engaged as double-agents and saboteurs, some of their deeds as yet unacknowledged, like the then-secret Order of the Phoenix (picture below). And for many others, the mere act of staying alive despite the hatred was their own resistance.

“It wasn’t, I suppose, very different from the second war. Tensions were jarring for those of us fresh out of Hogwarts and recently initiated into the conflict,” Solomon Carstairs admitted to his own experience as a young auror at the time.

Everyone became extremely close. Not just in law enforcement but outside of that as well, we forged great friendships. You have to, in a society as small as the wizarding world, where half of our friends and family are on the other side of the fight. Brother killing brother and lovers kept apart by different ideals.

When asked if he thought whether young wixes today have it much easier than their older counterparts, Carstairs dismissed the notion.

”They have different battles and forces colluding against them. Who am I to compare struggles?” he brings the conversation back to the present. “These are far from peaceful times so the most I can ask of the younger generation is to learn what they can from the two wars: be vigilant. Even with the people you hold closest to your hearts.”

Defeat

Historian, Hogwarts Headmaster, and former Wizengamot Elder Knox Greyfriar provided some context in our interview.

Many credit the infant Harry Potter as the one responsible for the death of Lord Voldemort, but I think it’s worth considering that credit should go to his mother Lily Potter who spent her best and final years in active rebellion against the Death Eaters. It was her love and magic that protected young Harry, that ultimately lead to the backfire and apparent destruction of the dark lord.

Greyfriar went on to say, “Mr. Potter has since proved himself a brave hero, and certainly all who fought in those times should be worthy of our admiration and remembrance as well.”

When we asked Greyfriar about his own role in the first war, he was surprisingly vague. “Not all memories are worth reliving, so hm.“

Those We Lost

Too many were lost during those dark times, and many of those who survived had to face Voldemort’s second reign of terror. Families and loved ones of those lost were among the greatest foes of that renewed force of destruction.

Hermione Granger, a witch famous for her own role in the 1998 final defeat of Lord Voldemort, and currently a well-known activist for the rights of magical non-human beings had this to add:

We have to remember that muggles and wix were not the only victims. House elves, goblins, vampires, centaurs, and many giants were specifically targeted by the Death Eaters.

Former Minister of Magic Millicent Bagnold, noted for being quiet in the press as a rule, was kind enough to offer this reflection:

These were times shrouded in fog and peril and our world will be forever scarred. But by sheer determination and grit, many who might have been lost were saved.
