Messages - Osha Warrington

Osha's smile brightened even further at the compliment - she liked picking outfits to wear in the shop, especially now that mum had given up on trying to influence her style. The younger witch smoothed her skirt and did a half curtsy, laughing.

"Thanks! It's an in colour, innit?" she pinched the sleeve of her cardigan. "Been seeing this just bout everywhere. I'm saving up to get a coat in, like, a lighter shade, but Merlin knows it'll carry a stain."

You could never really bring anything nice to Hogwarts without expecting it to bear the marks of whatever madness a new year brought. She'd just have to be precious about it.

"But, right, Jasmines, you were saying..." Osha righted herself from the distraction and looked around the shop again, deliberating. "Jasmine's like... real strong, it could go over the incense. We got some Spanish Jasmine, nice stuff, but you have to be good with your charms."

She knelt, picking up a small pot of overflowing vines from a lower shelf, with a few waxy white flowers spilling forth.

The aroma was distinct as she placed it on the counter. "So, Jasmine isn't from round these parts, needs heating charms. Got to keep it balanced or she'll wilt like nobody's business. Best keep her against a wall, they're vine plants you know."

Osha would be lying if she said she wasn't relieved about the failure of their not-so-secret plan to get drinks. She was pretty sure she wouldn't even like stout... or ale or beer, judging from the smell of the bar whenever she went up to it.

Sam managed to smooth out any awkwardness with the witch taking orders, and Osha smiled her most innocent smile. "Yeah that sounds good," she nodded at the order of butterbeers and whatnot.

And then Zeta's voice was in her ear. She followed her friend's gaze to the familiar blonde figure, and stood a little straighter as if that would help her get a better look at the situation.

"Your sis is so pretty," Osha giggled, "she probably gets chatted up all the time. He looks okay I think, if she likes blokes like that..." her tone implied that she herself was not a fan. But she didn't really know who or what she liked these days.

It was enough to have a good time and listen to nice music.

She nodded along as the other girl explained what she needed the petals for, though it didn't sound dumb or odd to her at all. Loads of people came in looking for petals to throw in baths and on beds; it was really awkward sometimes, especially when it was grown wizards who obviously didn't want to say they wanted them for romantic times.

"Weird smells, huh?" Osha's lips pulled into a thoughtful half-smile as her hands went behind her back, eyes sweeping the shop. "Honestly it's better to burn something first if you want to cleanse the air, like incense or an essential oil. That way you aren't just masking a bad smell..."

After another pensive second, she made a gesture. "Hold on."

Osha darted off and went around the shop to pick a few things off the shelf before she returned to the counter, where she deposited them.

"Okay, check it," she indicated a few tiny glass bottles first. "These are like, basic cleansing oils. You put them in a tiny burner. Tea Tree is fab but kind of, like, medicinal? Sage and sweet orange dissipate faster, after you burn them. Or you can try the incense versions."

Glancing back up, she tapped the narrow stack of incense sticks on the counter. "After that you can use the petals.  So what you want to do is use scents that match or smell nice together."

"I'm Osha by the way," she smiled, because she liked her summer job very much.

Osha glanced at the bar setting up, and when she looked back to their group it had grown with the addition of Meredith and Blake. She didn't know either of them that well but they were only a year ahead, and generally friendly.

Everyone started talking about drinks, which was good because she was starting to feel parched. But...

“Hey you’re older, get us some proper drinks, like?” Heather directed this at Sam.

"Whoah should we rea--" Osha began but Zeta was already way ahead of her, and in the other direction. "I'll have a martini. Osha? You want one?" her housemate asked, as if they drank martinis all the time. Maybe Slythies and the other rich kids did, with their trips to Europe and their posh dinners at home.

Her mum would scream bloody murder if she found out!

"Oh um," Osha's cheeks warmed, torn between instinctive fear and not wanting to be the downer of the group. Think of a drink, come on!! "Just a chocolate stout if they have it," she smiled nervously at Sam.

She had seen someone order that ages ago in the Leaky Cauldron, and the memory had only stuck because she didn't know that they even made chocolate stout.

5

She was relieved Zeta thought it was a wicked idea for them to do some snooping later. Osha nodded along as she explained to Ambrose what the whole deal was with Calaveras. Luckily they didn't linger on the subject, because a familiar face came along to join their growing group.

“How do you do fellow kids?”
      "“Guys this is Sam..."

"Oh yeah!" Osha exclaimed with a laugh after introduction, it finally hit her. "You were in Floriblunders recently right? Petals, I remember."

With the exception of lovey dovey secrets, florists were not sworn to confidentiality over their customers. She looked the witch up and down, as inconspicuously as she could. Didn't look any different from earlier this month; maybe Ambrose hadn't seen her for ages. Nice boots.

Osha slipped her hand through Zeta's arm, seeking that little hint of social comfort - it was silly but she hadn't expected strangers to join them tonight. It was different here, without her flowers around her. She smiled sweetly at Sam anyway.

She had turned on the Wireless while she was working, having been left to mind Floribunder's until her mother had returned to run the later shift. It was classical music - Tchaikovsky - but only because Osha didn't want to inflict her own taste on unsuspecting customers or patrons walking through the door.

Floriblunders was bigger than it seemed from the outside, where row upon row of colourful summer flowers were arranged in buckets next to the entrance. Inside, too, there were flowers everywhere. When you entered it was mostly more buckets of single flowers on either side, with potted flowers hanging from the beams above.

Deeper in were flower arrangements, bouquets, more potted plants, gardening equipment, seeds. Even a wall of moss and highland florets. It was neat but busy with things to look at.

Osha sat behind a long wooden counter here, arranging a bouquet in a shimmering blue vase. Behind her was a workshop area with an immense working table surrounded by the shop's more dangerous flowers and plants.

"Um, hi there, this may sound odd..."

Osha glanced up from her task, partially obscured by deep brown petals and periwinkle leaves. "Hi!" she grinned at the other witch as she slid the vase aside and hopped off her stool. "I'm Osha. Um, we totally do," her hands went behind her back as she glanced around the shop at some usual suspects

"Depends on what you need it for? Chrysanthemums have loads of petals but they're tiny..." Osha walked over to one of open shelves by the window, with a wide pot of orange-yellow flowers. "And we have Larissa Lavender if you need them for potions, but you'll also need some special plant food if you want them to grow faster."

7

Osha was excited to hear the band - she kept getting distracted from her own group, gaze darting intermittently in the direction of the wixes setting up. But then Heather started talking about her nails, and Osha's attention was drawn back to the standing tables with a smile.

              "They're terrific!"
"Oh, they're wicked aren't they?" she spoke at the same time as Zeta, admiring the tiny crows.

She was carrying a crow tote but otherwise dressed like she normally would when going out with friends. Ma had pinned a yellow Gerbera to her dress, and helped get her curls under control with a silk scarf. Osha was practically an adult but she found herself spending more and more of her holidays with her mother at Floribunders.

It was nice to get out and have a different kind of good time.

"I think they'd kick our arses out at Death & Co," she mused, fiddling with the strap of her bag. "But I heard Calaveras is easy. I mean -" Osha quickly looked at Zeta, sheepish, "- if you[1] want to investigate, not just for fun."

Barely awake and already Zeta Pepper was making plans. Osha needed breakfast in her before she could even think that far along so she let her future self get carried away on her friend's words, buying Howlers off a Prewett on the train.

"Sounds good," she yawned and sat up straight as the other girl shook out her lovely hair.

The grass is always greener. Osha loved her curls and all the stuff she could do with them, but she felt a tinge of envy when she observed Zeta's red hair - the kind of hair that bent to the will of a brush.

"Do you and Theta have plans?" Osha reached out to casually run her fingers through the soft strands. "Ma's putting me to work at the shop I think. Spring, you know, there's going to be flowers everywhere."

She sighed a dreamy sigh, smiling to herself. Osha loved flowers. "Come see me? I can make you a bouquet to take home."

Although she had been awake a while, reading Witch Weekly and getting ready for the day, Osha felt like she could go right back to sleep now. It was just...  everything seemed too much to take in, if she closed her eyes it would all go away for an hour or two.

But she didn't close her eyes, laughing instead at Zeta's stink bomb plan. It wasn't a terrible idea, she thought, those haters wouldn't be able to party it up if they were holding their noses the whole time!

"We could send Howlers. Sorry. Just angry. You're so nice."

Osha used her elbow to gently poke her friend in the side. "I'm not. I just don't think yelling at people does anything, I get so tired being angry all the time you know?"

When she was little she would be so mad at any sign of injustice, her whole face would burn up. And the Veela fireballs, Merlin, never again! Not unintentionally anyway.

"But we could send Howlers if you want..." Osha hugged Zeta's arm, her voice lighter. "It would make us feel better at least," she added in a giggle.

They couldn't change the world with a Howler but they could make themselves feel less awful about it.

       "I hate everything."

Osha flipped the magazine close, shooting her dorm mate a half-smile. Oh she did not mean that. Even if she had a point. Like, a really good point. It seemed indecent that anyone could take out such an obviously discriminatory ad. And she bet loads of people didn't even blink when they saw it!

"Aye, but none of them are allowed in this bed are they?" she nudged Zeta's shoulder with her own and then rested her head on it, looping an arm through the other girl's. "What's really shit is that it's an adult place, we can't just boycott it like Zonko's."

Zonko's relied heavily on students and kids. This pub, restaurant, whatever? All the grown-ups would be there drowning their so-called sorrows and not giving a shit about werewolves.

"I'm going to tell my ma and da not to go there, ever." Osha mumbled, coming down from the indignation a little. "But why is it so hard to change people's minds, Zeta? It just doesn't make sense."

There, that was the reaction she was looking for! Osha grinned a little and shook her head, curls jostling against Zeta's red crown. Not everyone appreciate her housemate's fiery zeal for justice but Osha loved it.

She loved that the other girl still asked stuff like, what was the point of being mean? Because yeah, that was totally a question everyone should be asking! Why be mean!

"Zee," she placed her hand over Zeta's. "We know why they do it. People like throwing parties and they'll go right up to each other's faces and say you're not invited, mate."

Human nature, thought Osha. She sighed, settling back against the headboard and raising her eyebrows. "They just want to... to get into their stupid little parties and laugh about the poor werewolves."

Osha rolled her eyes, as if it was totally unreasonable for her housemate to not be wide awake at this very instant.

"It's that pub near Knockturn!" she explained with a huff, propping herself up against the headboard as she pulled the covers up along with her. "Or it was a pub, I think it's a restaurant now or something. Mum said some American bought it over."

Her mother wrote her about the latest goings-on in Diagon - or at least whatever she heard from those passing through Floriblunders. Osha didn't think much of Americans, the tourists in London were so rude.

"Anyway..." Osha squinted at the page, like she could burn a hole through it with her glare. "You know what? I'll read it, sleepy head," she mussed up Zeta's hair. "Tired of dreading the full moon? Fed-up with those early nights, fearful thoughts? Of having to feel afraid in your own wonderful magical town?"

She made a sound of frustration. "They want to throw full moon parties. Werewolves not invited. Duh."

Hufflepuff House / [31 March] News of the World

Morning, Hufflepuff Dorms.

Osha had gotten up earlier than usual because of a nightmare she couldn't remember - and frankly didn't want to remember. She didn't see how it could possibly help anyway. It wasn't early enough for her to stay in bed so she got on with her morning, quietly, not wanting to wake up her dormmates who were trying to sleep in on Saturday.

That went out of the window while she was sitting on her bed, brushing her teeth while she flipped through this weekend's Witch Weekly[1]. Reading WW in bed was her weekend indulgence, sometimes even with a biscuit or cup of tea pilfered from the kitchens. It was comforting to ogle the gossip of the world.

But when she got to the ad for Calaveras....

"Zeta!" Osha pulled open the curtains on one side of her housemate's four poster bed, hissing urgently. "Zeta, wake up!!" she climbed under the comforter and shook its warm, sleepy occupant. "Oh come on! It's not that early!"

Well, not too early anyway. Osha nudged under the covers with her feet and stuck the magazine in front of Zeta's face. "You have to see this."

4th March '20

Uncle Om,

I knew your address had a funny name!

So happy I get to be the one who drops the SAWS gossip on you. Zonkos did an offensive thing, and were totally insulting when we wrote to complain, and now we're planning to go protest at the next Hogsmeade weekend! With signs and everything!! Nothing extreme. There's like a zero chance of Lucinda or Greer of turning into nasty werewolves.

They're the werewolves. I think it's kind of weird that we all sit around talking about how to protect them? Greer's still a kid but Lucinda's like, a fourth year, and she just sits there and tries to shrink herself. Like, come on girl! Take charge of your life!!

What happened to the hungry lawyer and poisoned chocolates?? I know lawyers are the worst but I hope they're still kicking.

Hogsmeade weekend is the 18th. You should come! Be a big bad auror at our protest. Maybe bring me some fresh flowers from mum (pllleeeaaase)?? Daffodils and Hyacinths will be in season.

Love love love,

Osha!

Correspondence / [March 3rd] Hairy Things Afoot (Omari)

October 14, 2020, 04:58:23 AM

A letter arrives in a lilac envelope, written on thick pressed paper that smells faintly of jasmine flowers.

To: Auror Omari Warrington. DMLE (LEVEL 2), THE MINISTRY OF MAGIC.
From: Osha Warrington. HOGWARTS.

Uncle Om,

I lost your address! How did I lose your address? You're my favourite uncle! Or maybe this is a clever excuse for not writing to you sooner? Either way, sorry! School has been predictably busy. If I'm not studying then I'm being whisked away on adventures by people like Zeta. I'm not sure if you've heard about it yet - the way we go on here, it feels like all of wizarding society should already know - but we're organising a protest!

Well I say 'we' but I mean SAWS is organising a protest. It's against Zonko's, because they did a stupid thing. That lollipop that makes you grow hair all over (gross who would even want that?).

Anyway, send me your address. And some fresh gossip PLEASE
. I'm so tired of gossip about students pranks and graffiti or whatever. Ministry gossip has to be next-level, right?

Your favourite niece,

Osha-sha

P.S. give da a hug for me if you see him!
