The big house was full to the brim with life - not all big houses were! That was always the hope, that a student had a supportive family back home. Not everybody did. Whatever the Schäfers expected today, Knox was now more hopeful than not that things would go well.
"Greyfriar," he gently corrected as a matter of course. "Very good to meet you, I --."
Knox was cut short by the boisterous arrival of Micha. Knox smiled, genuinely pleased to see him, immediately able to picture him in the halls of Hogwarts. You could never tell by looking, but every professor seemed to think they could spot that magical potential before it was fully formed.
"Hello, Micha," Knox said and offered his hand. This was Micha's meeting and so due deference would be paid the boy.
"Where should we chat, just us and your parents, eh?" he asked. Then conspiratorially, "somewhere where we won't be spied on."

History of Magic Classroom / Re: [1 May] Making Something of A SelfApril 06, 2022, 08:19:51 PM The history professor erupted into a short peal of booming laughter at Blake's contradiction, that Greyfriar did in fact not hesitate to lob students hither and thither.
"I am accused!" he laughed and wagged his finger. Blake pressed for more concrete guidance, but his professor considered this counsel at an end. "Questions for the experts, Mr. Blake, not some old fool with reading glasses. Begone. Out, out of my sight. Have a lovely day!" Never was a student so cheerfully banished from extra studies than today Mr. Blake Knight. fin 3
Muggle London / Re: [24 July] There's a Castle WaitingMarch 31, 2022, 09:34:22 AM 'That school,' the young woman said. The knowing utterance was a surprise for Knox who raised his thick eyebrows. It wasn't a good or bad omen. He'd just have to find out what it was they know about that school, or what they thought they knew.
Knox did not speak German, so he could only wait politely while the family ostensibly arranged themselves to receive the unannounced visitors. But! He did catch the name 'Micha' in the flow. The dogs were getting over excited and Knox could not longer help but acknowledge them with a few soft words. "You're doing a very good job, fending off strange invaders." He greeted the tall blonde man who appeared, returning the handshake and nodding to a younger woman with black hair and striking eyes. "I am Professor Greyfriar," he said. "This is my associate Professor Malfoy." Unusual names to muggle ears, he knew. "Is there a place we can talk? Micha as well?" 4
Muggle London / Re: [24 July] There's a Castle WaitingMarch 20, 2022, 08:44:03 PM Knox did not balk at the dachshunds; he was generally unalarmed by animals and generally enjoyed their company. He related to them mostly by letting them alone until they approached him on their own terms. And what was the saying? A dachshund will dachshund. The old wizard, then, made the courtesy of politely waving away any apologies of the dogs' person, a blonde young woman who'd taken refuge on the stoop of number eleven.
"Don't think of it at all. I can relate." Knox double-checked his parchment. "Ah, well, perhaps they are right to sound the alarm. This is the place. Mr. Malfoy?" Draco was sulking although Knox guessed charitably that he was trying not to. It had been awhile since they'd had a professor at Hogwarts so ill-suited to interacting with children and who went to such lengths as to hide his efforts to improve this. Nevertheless. Greyfriar began climbing the stoop, unconcerned about the dogs who he guessed would quiet down as soon as they could sniff about the hem of his trousers. "Do you live here?" Knox asked the young woman. "We're here to see Micha and his parents," - Knox consulted the paper again and read their names aloud. "We're from the school." Then Knox smiled pleasantly. "Do you need a card?" Muggles often appreciated a small bit of paper with a name on it. 5

Tuesday at 8pm Schäfer Residence 11 Vicarage Gate Kensington, London The sun was still up when two men seemed to appear out of nowhere near the west end of Hyde Park in London. They were dressed strangely and didn't know exactly where they were going. The first man was well over six feet tall and heavily set with dark and silver hair and beard. He wore a long coat despite the warm weather. He was accompanied by a younger man with white-blond hair and a nice suit. They were wizards and they were looking for a boy, now eleven years old, who lived at number eleven. The larger man was called Knox Greyfriar and he was continuing and explanation to the younger man. "I've done dozens of these and they've all gone differently. It's remarkable how well most take it. I've only been chased off a handful of times. You try again in a few days, after they've cooled down, understand." Knox was the Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The other man, Draco Malfoy, was the Potions master there. Knox had insisted Professor Malfoy come along in this duty so, he explained, he'd have a better understanding of the muggleborn students. "But you never know what you're walking into. All we get is the name and address. Oh look at that. An umlaut. German, do you think?" The parchment in his hand, which he held well away from his nose, said Micha Schäfer. 6
History of Magic Classroom / Re: [1 May] Making Something of A SelfMarch 12, 2022, 09:24:32 PM Knox was so amused by Blake's manner. It was self-assured, interested, and unintimidated - content, maybe, and not awkward at all in the attention from his professor. Knox wondered if that easiness would last through his seventh year when faced with the reality of the complexities of life outside of the castle. Knox sometimes wondered if this was what drew so many of his students to work in the Ministry, the very school-like nature of it.
No, the Headmaster smiled and nodded along. Blake was not ready to commit to anything and that was perfectly fine. "That's a terrible thing to do to an old wizard, Mr. Knight. No no, I'm not throwing you anywhere!" he laughed. "Imagine I set you down a path and you end up dead or bored and then it'd all my fault. Oh, that Professor Greyfriar, that hack, put me up to this! I trusted him. How would I live with that? No, I shall invite credit as an inspiration only. Blame me if you wish, but not for your career choice. Anything is fine by me." He got up from the chair to move around the small lecture theatre-style classroom. "No, Mr. Knight, let's consider your options narrowed for the time being. Obliviator, Cursebreaker, Unspeakable - or an unspoken fourth option. Research them, try them on for size. Summer is not far away. Think of it." 7
Correspondence / Re: [Aug 15] With Great Responsibility, Comes A Shiny BadgeFebruary 21, 2022, 03:00:41 PM Oh yes, each letter made its way speedily across the country to the accomplished young wix. Save one. The letter addressed to one ambitious Ravenclaw was waylaid permanently when a certain black bird came to conflict with the Hogwarts owl, claiming for her own the silver and enamel charm meant for Eirene.

The fall term will cover pureblood extremism in the form of Tom Riddle and Death Eaters. The students will have ample access to contemporary newspaper articles, recordings of wireless programs, and Ministry archival materials. There will be guest speakers Students will... ... work to construct a timeline of events over the course of the term and come up with definitions of concepts. ... compare/contrast Death Eaters from the 1970s, 1990s, and if they can identify any current purebloodist movements. ... analayse bias in the media ... conduct interviews with people who lived through these times 10
Archived Plots / Re: New member here!January 27, 2022, 09:09:33 PM Thanks! Sorry about putting in the OOC area, wasn't sure where to put it. I would love to do something with either Quill or Niobe (or both!). Let's do Quill and Theodore out in the field. I'll start something for us tomorrow. 11
Archived Plots / Re: New member here!January 27, 2022, 01:29:50 PM Welcome!
I have some ideas: Theodore and my Quill Som who is head of the Dept. of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes have some kind of accident or catastrophe to investigate out in the field regarding the misuse of muggle artifacts. My Niobe Thursby is abouts his age, so perhaps they know each other. She's on the crime beat for the Daily Prophet, so could have reason to bug him for a story. Have a wand need? Garrick Ollivander's niece Tamzin Ollivander is here for that, as well as judging your side of the family. Need a lawyer? My Talisha Crowe is affordable and strange. Edit: Moved this thread to the plotting boards. 12
History of Magic Classroom / Re: [1 May] Making Something of A SelfJanuary 25, 2022, 01:05:22 PM The Headmaster was a fellow who showed his interest (or disinterest, as the case might be) earnestly, approving or disapproving of notions even before whoever he was talking to had finished talking. Blake Knight was an easy talker and Greyfriar would say he was capably introspective. He knew his heart and knew about it. Rarer among youth and young men was this quality.
"Absolutely. Brilliant, Mr. Knight," he answered without delay, sitting forward to rest his elbows on the desk. Blake was a young wizard full of action. He moved, he acted, he was involved. "How capable are you in the muggle world? That could be a revealing answer. If it's a strange place for you, how would you feel to be thrown in, to..." Knox flourished a hand, "...to be thrown in. Obliviators must be fluent with the mundane and totally dedicated to the Statute of Secrecy - not everyone can stomach it. Curse-breaking, less exposure, opportunities beyond the Ministry. Unspeakables though - my impression is of them holed up in that strange warren, deep in magic, far from the upside world." 13

Tuesday around noon History of Magic classroom Professor Knox Greyfriar was going on. "... and it's to your credit to be starting early. It's been in fashion for decades, I'm sure, for students to wait until this time in their seventh year before bushwhacking a path from academics to something applicable, and I haven't found that Ravenclaw are exceptional in this. I'd say it's Hufflepuff who are more aware of life after Hogwarts than the rest of the houses, honestly. I think it's because no one excepts very much of them here, don't you find? Surely not," the Headmaster answered Blake for himself. "You give everyone a chance. You're just that sort, aren't you? Just the same, you're doing us all proud, Mr. Knight. So what have you got for me?" Some weeks ago, following the end of his year's career day, Professor Greyfriar had set Blake Knight to put his mind to applying classroom lessons to practical application, something that answered the question, 'what is the point of studying the History of Magic?' which was something everyone had to figure out for themselves. The Professor had no objections either to Mr. Knight incorporating any other courses of study that interested him, not excluding the study of ancient runes or Arithmancy - both subjects with bad reputations. The professor, a bear-sized old wizard, found his chair and sat back with a creak. 15
