Messages - Bran Byddir

Of course, your average Bridge House resident was the sort who easily got bored and lacked the coping strategies of appropriately managing that boredom.  If they didn't thrive on rabble rousing before they ended up in Azkaban, they definitely left it that way.  So, it didn't take a lot for some of the other residents to notice Eddie's mirroring of Bran's trip to the water cooler and back.  Soon, other residents started popping up to grab a cup of water, either individually or in pairs.

As such, the entire rec room knew the moment the Man in Black started across the street towards the front porch.  Even the cognitively-dense pair of hitwizards manning the desk at the front of the room noticed the emotional shift.  Bran dropped his head and grumbled under his breath, scooping the cards into his pocket just as the hitwizards got to their feet.

"Dog catchers' getting antsy.  Pending lockdown," Bran mouthed to his tablemates.  "I'm heading out for a smoke before they kennel us."  Finally, he scraped the small mound of currency chits into his hand and started towards the door.

Half a stride from the rickety, screen-lined, he heard the magically-amplified voice call over the room.  "Rec room is closed.  Rec room is closed.  Returned to your rooms until further notice."

Under the cover of scraping chairs and shuffling bodies, Bran reached the door and pushed back out onto the porch.  The hitwizards' repeating announcement followed him outside as he trotted down the steps and out into the street, sparing the man a bored glance as he pulled a cigarette from his pocket.

"Looking for someone you recognize, bud?" he asked, fishing a match free from his pocket as he passed by the bloke.  "Father?  Lover?  'Fraid whoever your gawking for has been sent to his room by the Ministry nannies.  Might need to come back later," he added as he passed the man, turning slight to walk backwards as he finished talking with a coy grin.

Diagon Alley / Re: [December 6] Hell's Ditch [Closed]

Slowly, methodically, Bran traced a fingertip over the top edge of each card, only half-aware of the roughened edge that traced along his skin.  Dale was taking his sweet time deciding whether to play or fold and the bloke's hesitation was playing on Bran's already frayed nerves.  It was Dale, right?  No.  Maybe it was Derrick.  Daryl.  Not that it mattered.  As the Bridge House's most recent arrival, recently assigned to the empty lower bunk in Bran's room that had vacated by the poorly, dearly departed Gibbon, Bran was sure he'd commit the guy's name to memory before too long.

Things at the Bridge House tended to move at their own, slow, pointless pace.  The limited opportunities to occupy one's mind and hands with could fray the edges of any sane person's temper.  But, they were now just over two days away from the start of the next full moon and Bran was already starting to feel the excitement of extra moonlight through his veins.  Sitting here, pretending to give a crap about a card game was getting progressively more difficult.

"If ye lookin' for a personal sign from the Lady Morgana, might want t' give up now," Bran prompted, reaching across the table to flick the back the Big D's cards, causing the man to jump and grumble.  But, the guy made no attempt to play his hand.  With a sigh of impatience, Bran set his cards face down on the table and got to his feet to fetch a cup of water from the pitcher by the window.  Water.  Provided to them by their Ministry kennel workers.  Because no one in the House actually had a wand to get water for themselves.  The old, ex-DE shook his head as he filled his cup.

"Going to step outside for a smoke," Bran announced, folding his hand and brushing the small stack of shirt buttons they used for currency closer to the center of the table.  Cup in hand, he slipped through the door and strode the length of the creaky porch to plop himself down on the long, splintery bench.

"You don't look easy to impress, mate," Bran spoke loudly, slipping a smoke free from his pocket and lighting it with a match.  "Don't imagine you're here to get a good story to discuss around the cubicle tomorrow.  Looking for someone specific?"

He spotted the figure lurking across the street as he lifted the cup to take a sip.  Brooding.  Dark, indistinct robes.  More silver than the typical man wore for aesthetic purposes.  Bran didn't recognize the man from his time at the Bridge House, but there was always the chance he was a previous resident passing by on a stroll down memory lane.  He turned to beckon one of the more long-term residents over for an assessment but caught the ever-watchful eye of the Dog Catcher on Duty.

Cup in hand, he snaked his way back to the seat and nudged Eddie under the table with his shoe.  "Might want to go get yourself some water.  Tourist outside, moody sort.   Curious if you recognize him."  For a few moments, laziness seemed to spar with curiosity but, eventually, the older wizard got to his feet and went to peek out the window.

Wand: N/A - Bran is currently restricted from possessing a wand

Physical Description:
At 5'11 and roughly 135 pounds, Bran is muscular but wiry.  Without the oppressive effects of the dementors, Bran was able to adhere to an exercise routine during his twenty-two years in Azkaban that left him strong but with very little body fat.  His skin has grown pale and his eyes are still noticeably sunken after so many years in the dimly lit prison.

Though his hair is naturally a light brown, he frequently changes the color with dye.  Currently he dyes it to a pitch black, though sometimes he bleaches it to a stark white.  Both are a stark contrast to his pale blue eyes, an effect he purposefully creates.  He has several prominent tattoos: an intertwined serpent and dagger on his right shoulder and arm as well as an ink-darkened dark mark on his left forearm.  He also has several facial piercings.

Being unemployed and only recently reintegrated with society, Bran's attire is restricted to second hand clothes and robes.  He tries his best to create a patchwork style from the garments available to him but his current outfits only make him appear more scraggly.  On account of his wandless status, Bran carries himself in a manner that makes him appear as imposing and commanding as possible.

Personality Description:
Bran Byddir is crass and cynical, well-roughed around the edges by over two decades in Azkaban.   While not naturally introverted, his school days left him with a strong disdain and distrust for those outside his social circle.  He has a fairly small circle of individuals he trusts; anyone outside that circle is kept at arm's length until they've been properly measured and calculated.

Prior to ending up in Azkaban, Bran struggled with shaping his vision of his identity into something he was comfortable with and proud of.  His time in Azkaban has only served to intensify his uncertainty.

History:
Bran Byddir was the first born son and the eldest of three siblings born to the muggle Aeron Byddir and his wife Ceri, a muggleborn witch.  A coal farmer, like his father before him, Aeron Byddir had been childhood friends with Ceri Merrick.  After graduating Hogwarts, Ceri Merrick returned to Blaenavon where she opened up a small wizarding apothecary.  Aeron and Ceri began dating and, three years later, Aeron learned of Ceri's magical abilities on the couple's wedding night.  Bran was born two years later, followed by his younger brother Iwan and, later, their baby sister Rhian.

The first wizarding war was well underway when Bran Byddir arrived at Hogwarts and was sorted into Slytherin.  It didn't take long for the eleven year old to realize the disadvantage his blood status created.  He quickly began seeking a reputation apart from his blood status and grew shameful of his family background.  The shame only intensified as he actively diverted his housemates' attention away from his home life and family.

At the beginning of his second year, Voldemort's attempt to murder Harry Potter resulted in the dark wizard's apparent defeat.  Attitudes throughout the castle took a dramatic shift and Bran found himself the subject of more distrust as a Slytherin.  For the rest of his school days, his blood status seemed to matter less.  Many fellow Slytherins saw their family members arrested and sent to Azkaban.  There was a new safety and camaraderie among the Slytherins as they navigated a post-Voldemort world.

Bran completed his wizarding education, earning OWLs in Defense Against the Dark Arts, Potions, Transfiguration, Divination, Charms and Ancient Runes.  He earned only two NEWTs: Defense Against the Dark Arts and Charms.  He moved to London and got a job working in a shop in Knockturn Alley and scraping out a living.

When Voldemort rose to power the second time, Bran promptly joined the dark wizard's ranks.  He started out as a snatcher and was responsible for catching, torturing and turning over almost thirty-five muggleborns to the Ministry of Magic.  He was on duty in Hogsmeade the night Harry Potter's return to Hogwarts triggered the caterwauling charm.  When the battle broke out, Bran fought alongside the other Death Eaters but when the Dark Lord was defeated, Bran made a break for it.  He managed to evade the Ministry's capture for three months but, finally, in August of 1998, Bran stood trial.  He was found guilty for muggle-baiting, torture and subversion against the Ministry.  He boasts that he was the one that caused the explosion that killed Fred Weasley, but this claim has never been substantiated.

On August 28th, 1998, Bran Byddir was sentenced to 13 years in Azkaban.  On May 1st, 2011, Bran was released to a Ministry Bridge House in London where he began his transition back into society.  His conditional release includes a required weekly supervisory check ins and full restrictions on the possession of a wand.  He is under supervision for a minimum of three years.  In the spring of 2014, Bran is eligible to have a hearing in front of the Wizengemot transition further into society.

Sum up your character in one paragraph:
Bran Byddir is a bitter, hardened middle-aged ex-Azzie who has just started transitioning back to the outside world.  Though his blood status and general lack of talent kept Bran out of the inner Death Eater circle, he was quick to join Voldemort's forces and fight in the second wizarding war.  He's actively seeking employment in the wizarding world, but his criminal background and ministry supervision has made the task challenging.
