Messages - Declan Murphy

Find Teagan a boyfriend. Now, Declan was fond of Candice. He was really, really fond of her. And he liked this new... whatever was developing between them. But sometimes she had crazy ideas, and this was one of them. Well, okay, he didn't really mind if his sister got a boyfriend, he guessed. But the part about finding one of his friends from the ministry to set her up with? That part was crazy.

"Um. No." Declan made a face. He couldn't think of a single co-worker he'd be willing to see parading around with his sister on their arm. "Teagan's loose enough. Besides, doesn't she like that um... that professor guy?" It had been kind of all Teagan had talked about for like a week or two. And the guy had sent her a cheesey Christmas present. "I sort of thought something was happening there."

CRASH!

Declan immediately tensed at the sound, and his head turned sharply in the direction the noise came from. It was a result of work-related reflexes - never trust sudden loud noises. Especially in a place like Calaveras, a notable haven for ne'er-do-wells. But it turned out to just be one of the bus boys or something. Declan shrugged and turned back to Candice, resuming chatting with the blonde with his mouth half-full of whatever delicious thing she happened to be cooking.

This peace was short lived, however, as the crashing sounds were replaced with screams - from the dining room. Declan frowned, and drew his wand from his pocket, moving towards the door, and as a result found himself almost knocked to the ground by the wave of people who tumbled into the kitchen. What the hell?

He heard some hysterical cries of 'werewolf!', but that was impossible. It was daylight."Stay here!" He shouted back to Candy, over the crowd, as he tried to push through the frenzy with Nate, in an attempt to see what was happening.

 Finally seventh year rolled around and it was back to the library, preparing for NEWTs. These he passed well enough that after graduation in 1999 he was able to enter training as a hit wizard. He has now been at the job for ten years, and has found no reason to be dissatisfied with his chosen career, except for the suits he must sometimes wear at the office.

What is your job description? How do you go about your job?
How did you get your current job? How does your past and abilities justify your current position?:

As a hit wizard, Declan assists aurors in the capture of dark witches and wizards. He patrols certain areas known for being up to no good, tracks down and captures criminals, and generally works to keep the public safe. Declan has known since he was a child that this was what he wanted to do, so immediately after Hogwarts he wasted no time in enrolling himself in the training program. Not only is he physically strong, but he is also good with his wand, particularly with defensive spells. He's an observant person and a quick thinker under pressure, all of which aids him in the field.

Finally seventh year rolled around and it was back to the library, preparing for NEWTs. These he passed well enough that after graduation in 1999 he was able to enter training with the Magical Law Enforcement Squad. He has now been at the job for ten years, and has found no reason to be dissatisfied with his chosen career, except for the suits he must sometimes wear at the office.

What is your job description? How do you go about your job?
How did you get your current job? How does your past and abilities justify your current position?:

Declan is basically the wizarding equivalent of a regular police officer. He patrols neighborhoods known for having a shady reputation to prevent criminal activity, and does his best to stop such activity when he comes across it. He aids in the investigation of crimes such as break ins, robberies, and assault, and arrests and interrogates suspects for these crimes.

He has known since he was a child that this was what he wanted to do with his life, and enrolled himself in the training program as soon as he graduated from Hogwarts. Not only is he physically strong, but he is also good with his wand, particularly with defensive spells. He's an observant person and a quick thinker under pressure, all of which aids him in the field. But the quality that serves him best is his devotion to justice and dedication to ensuring the safety of the people.

Why do you wish to change these area(s): When I initially submitted Declan's application, I was under the impression that hitwizards functioned pretty much as wizard police officers. I didn't want Declan to be an auror, since it's kind of a prestigious position, and I don't think Declan would like that. But anyway, it seems that hit wizards actually hunt down and capture dangerous dark wizards, and that's not what Declan's about. He's about protecting the people on a day to day basis. This fits him much better.
Other RPed Characters this may affect: Candice Stevenson (already notified), Tamis Raynor (since she's his Big Boss)

 As the blonde moved closer in order to get a look at the puppy, Declan couldn't help but notice how nice Candice smelled, particularly in comparison with the animals in the room. He didn't know if it was her perfume or shampoo or if she just naturally smelled like flowers, but he found the scent coupled with her proximity to be...distracting. He found himself paying more attention to the pretty psychiatrist than to the dog he was supposed to be inspecting. Oops. "Huh...? Oh, yeah. Adorable."

 Young, not too big, not too small... That didn't really tell the hit wizard much that he could work with. Not that it mattered, anyway. He was content to look at the dogs (and hang out with her), however long it took for her to find her furry Mr. Right. "Um...okay, then. We'll just keep looking, I guess," he shrugged, moving onto the next cage.

  He had to applaud her choice not to go with a cat, though. They were all right, he guessed, but he'd never been overly fond of them. You couldn't teach a cat to sit or stay, couldn't play fetch with it. And they always looked so judgmental, like they thought they were better than everybody. Dogs didn't judge. They had that whole unconditional love thing, like moms. Only...furrier. "I've never been much of a cat person, myself," was all he said out loud, however.

 "They do have to give us days off occasionally," he pointed out, grinning. "Much as they seem disinclined to do so. I already had the day off, and I didn't have anything else to do..." he trailed off, shrugging, as he bent down to look at the lab mixes with Candice. "Besides, I like dogs and I like hanging out with you - it's been nice, catching up with you again. Haven't had a lot of time for that lately."

 Finally Candice's familiar blonde head came into view, Declan grinning as she approached. "S'okay - it's not too bad out here," he lied, allowing the pretty psychiatrist to lead him into the building. It was fairly chilly out, but...well, he'd rather wait outside where it didn't look so weird than stand around awkwardly inside. He supposed it was a good thing that he'd been there early and not her - if she'd gone inside before he'd gotten there he would've been stuck standing out in the cold for a long time.

 Still, even though he'd only been out there for about ten minutes, he was thankful for the offered warming candy. The temperature inside was, of course, significantly higher than it was out of doors, but this would help the chill pass faster. "Thanks," he told her, accepting the candy and popping it into his mouth. How had he ever gotten along without these? They satisfied his sweet tooth and protected him from the weather at the same time. An amazing invention.

  "Age before beauty," Candy said, holding the door open, causing Declan to grin as he passed through. He wasn't that much older than the blonde - just a year. But she definitely qualified in the beauty category. "Good to know chivalry isn't dead yet," he replied teasingly, turning to peer into the nearest cage, which contained a small, scruffy little mutt - looked like some kind of terrier- with pleading brown eyes. Sigh...it was going to be difficult to resist not taking one of these home. "Any idea what kind of puppy you're looking for?"

 Going to animal shelters was dangerous business for Declan. He had a soft spot for animals, especially dogs, and knew that there would be some little guy in there whose sad puppy eyes he couldn't resist. He knew what his sister would have to say about it, too, when he brought the little guy home to the apartment they shared. They already had two dogs - that was enough. But those were Teagan's dogs, not his, and they were...well...girly. He liked them and all, but a man needed a man's dog. Something big and playful, like a german shepherd, or a husky or great dane or something. Not a peppy dalmatian and a little weiner dog.

 Still, he was going to try to refrain from giving into whatever sad puppy turned their big brown eyes on him. He hadn't come to look at dogs for him, anyway. Candice had mentioned going to look for a puppy, he'd said that he liked dogs, and she'd asked him to go with her. He hadn't seen his old house mate in a while, work had been keeping him busy, and he liked Candy. She was nice and pretty. He'd accepted with no hesitation.

 Now he stood outside the muggle animal shelter, hands shoved into his coat pockets. It was freakin' cold out. He just hoped Candy got there soon, so they could go ahead and go inside.

 Well, smooth. He'd startled her and made her get ice cream on her face. Brilliant. Bloody brilliant. "Oh, sorry," he exclaimed, a dismayed frown in place as his own cheeks flushed red. "Here...let me get you...uh...here." He fumbled around for some napkins, but she seemed to already have things under control. "Sorry," he mumbled again, just for good measure.

 Given what had just happened, it was pretty nice of her to offer him a seat. But then, Candice - err, Miss Stevenson - she was always nice. "Thanks, yeah, that'd be cool," he said, sliding into the open chair, shifting around until he got comfortable. "How uh...how's work going?"

 A bit of melted ice cream dribbled down the side of the cone and onto the back of his hand. He started to bring it up to his mouth so he could eat it off, but realized once he was almost there that...well, that wasn't the best of table manners. And he didn't want to look like a mannerless oaf in front of candy. So, blushing again, he wiped it off with a napkin instead. Pity. That was a whole bite of ice cream wasted.

 "Oh, uh...mint chocolate chip, with chocolate sprinkles and hot fudge." Notice a trend there? Yeah...Declan liked chocolate. Of course, he also enjoyed various other flavors that Fortescue's offered, but chocolate was his favorite. "What about you?" He asked, looking over at her ice cream. "Looks good, whatever it is."

 "Runespoors?" Declan was surprised. He raised his eyebrows at the witch. "I thought those were mostly in Africa." Of course, runespoor eggs were a very popular potion ingredient, so he supposed they weren't all that uncommon in the UK. Perhaps some improperly stored eggs had hatched and were causing trouble or something.

 That whole Hogwarts thing...it seemed to be getting pretty sticky. The subject of lycanthropy had always been rather controversial, and probably always would be. Personally Declan didn't think that werewolves should be treated any different than anyone else. It wasn't like they'd asked to be bitten, after all.

 "Yeah, I heard she expelled a student," he commented, wincing at a twinge of pain from the bites on his hand. Seriously. He was never leaving home without doxycide again. "Doesn't make much sense to me. If the girl's been going there that long without problems, why expel her now?"

 Fall was approaching at a decidedly steady pace, and the weather outside was just barely chilly enough that Declan felt the need to don a light jacket as he stepped outside. Of course, Declan was prone to being cold in general. Although people always told him he gave off body heat in the same way that a bakery gave off the smell of cookies, he never seemed to feel that warm himself. His sister complained that he kept the flat they shared sweltering, and of course he couldn't control the temperature at the office...so he'd taken to donning his favorite jacket instead.

 He hadn't intended to get ice cream. It wasn't exactly something he put at the top of his to do list, you know? It made him feel a bit like a twelve year old, standing in line for an ice cream cone, and therefore wasn't one of his favorite activities. But the Murphys were known for having a sweet tooth, and although his never hit him as hard as it did his sister, he was not immune. After his lunch, which he'd eaten at the Leaky Cauldron, he was struck with the need for something nice and sugary. The nearest location that could provide this for him was Fortescue's. And really, if he was going to stand in line for ice cream, it may as well be the best ice cream in London, right?

 So he made his way over to the little shop and ducked inside, walking up to the counter and waiting in line behind a very frazzled looking woman with three very noisy children. And by the time it was his turn at the front of the line? Declan was feeling a bit frazzled himself. A mint chocolate chip double scoop cone, however, would soon fix that. The tall young man plunked down the necessary amount of cash and ducked outside again...

 Where he saw Candy Stevenson. Had she been there the whole time? He hadn't noticed her before, and now that he had he paused, effectively blocking the doorway from anyone who wished to enter or exit the building. Miss Stevenson always had the effect of making him nervous. She was the Ministry's shrink, and he was always afraid that he'd say or do the wrong thing and she'd brand him as crazy.

 Plus, she was...well, very pretty. Declan didn't exactly know how to approach pretty girls. He figured, however, that it would be extremely rude to ignore her now. So, after a few more moments of hesitation, he shuffled up to her. "Nice day for ice cream, huh?" he greeted her with his best attempt at a charming grin.

 The door opened, and Moira entered. Well, if Declan had to be at St. Mungo's that evening, at least he got his favorite mediwitch, right? "It'd be nicer to see you if we ever met for a reason other than something trying to maim me," he pointed out, smiling at her anyway. It wasn't the widest smile, but hey - it was still a smile.

 "Think I'm going to start carrying around some Doxycide with me on patrol," he told the pretty witch, holding his hand up and flexing it a little...then wincing. That didn't help. Just hurt more. Right. No more moving. "They're nasty little buggers."

 Still, while he waited for the antidote to arrive (which, sweet magic, would it hurry up please?), he may as well make conversation. "So how you been, Moir?" he asked. She was a nice girl, and they'd gotten to know each other tolerably well over his many visits to this particular establishment. "Things going okay?"

 This was supposed to be Declan's night off. Right now he should be at home, watching football on the telly and drinking a beer while his sister Teagan made dinner. Instead, he found himself at St. Mungo's, nursing his injuries. And it was all Terry's fault. His co-worker had a family event to attend, and had asked Declan to cover for him, which the hitwizard had been happy to do. That, of course, was before the doxy.

 It had happened like this - he was on patrol, minding his own business, rounding the corner of Maple and Vine. This was generally a quiet neighborhood, but there'd been some break-ins recently that were suspected to be the work of a wizard. He'd heard a noise down a back alley and had of course followed it.

 But had he found a catburglar? Of course not. Instead, he'd found doxies. Three of them. "Freakin' doxies," he muttered under his breath, eying the ugly bites on his hands. He'd managed to subdue them with a few well aimed stunning spells, but not before they'd done their damage. It hurt like hell, and - not to sound like a baby or anything - he honestly just wanted to go home. Hopefully one of the mediwitches would get to him soon.

Your Handle: Declan Murphy
Your Mug:
Your Deal: 27 / Hufflepuff / Hitwizard
Your Value: halfblood
Why do I care?: I'm sorry to say we went to school together. Same year, different house. Didn't like him then, don't see any reason to change that now.
WBA?: Hell no.
Where are you?: hardcore hatred, childhood enemies
Where do you want to be?: maybe death wish someday, IDK.
Now what?: Well. I have in Declan's bio that he stayed behind to fight with the good guys, but got knocked unconcious shortly into the fray. Maybe Cin is the one who knocked him out? That would definitely give Declan another reason to dislike him haha

Claudia Vespucciano
Claims 29, Aide to the Minister of Magic
* Attraction / Flirtation *
I say- Tall, handsome, a perfect gentleman...How can a girl resist?
Declan says- Claudia is very pretty, and she seems like a nice girl. I wouldn't mind getting to know her better.

Moira Randall
25/Ravenclaw/Mediwitch
* Average Friends *
I say- Declan's a sweet guy.  I could always count on him to remind me how a gentleman behaves.
Declan says- Moira and I were at Hogwarts together, although she was a few years below me. As a hitwizard, I tend to interact with mediwitches on a pretty regular basis - a hazard of the job. We've gotten to know each other a bit better through that, and she's always got something nice to say.

Archer Daniel Radley
Hufflepuff, 37, Auror
* Acquaintances/Average Friends *
I say- Declan's a good guy.  Work ethic and loyalty are clear, good traits.  He'll go far.
Declan says- Radley's decent. Another Hufflepuff in the DMLE? Gotta be a good thing. Plus, he's good at his job and still knows how to have fun. He's good to have around.

Akiva Katz
28, Ravenclaw, Ministry Librarian
* Acquaintances *
I say- The hitwizard right?  I remember him from school.  He was very nice, though I didn't know him well.
Declan says- Miss Katz runs the library here, and we went to school together. We're not busom companions or anything, but she seems nice.

Malynda Viridian-Drake
 18, Tattoo parlor Owner
* Intense Dislike / Attraction to Declan *
I say- Murphy is one of those guys I would love to put me in handcuffs. Too bad he wouldn't take them off afterwards.
Declan says- Viridian-Drake? She's one of those kids who you can tell has potential hidden somewhere, but it's buried so far down it's unlikely that it will ever be realized. She's a known troublemaker - definitely one we're keeping a look out for. Never know what she might do.

Tamis Raynor
34, Ravenclaw Alumni, Head Auror
* Aquaintance *
I say- Murphy is a decent Hitwizard, reliable. It is a shame he did not get the Auror calling.
Declan says- Never has such a petite woman been so intimidating. I have a lot of respect for her, and she does a damn good job of heading up the auror office.
