Before the invitation, Rylan hadn't even been sure what Spellpunk was exactly, yet he had accepted anyway, glad to spend time with friends. He still wasn't entirely sure what to expect (especially given that this would be his first trip to Diagon Alley without his mother), but a bunch of teenagers together in what was essentially a club. What could go wrong?
His parents hadn't seemed to mind, so long as he came back by a certain hour and none too worse for the wear, but how possible that would be he would find out. he had already managed to lose track a couple of times, and speaking of which he had found himself lost in the crowd. Oh well, the others could only be around somewhere, but for now he recognised a few familiar faces in the crowd. Oh well, maybe he could talk to them instead, he decided as he battled his way over to where Tim, Frank and Noriko where standing. They looked uncomfortable, had he missed something?
"Hey Tim!", he called over the music as he made it toward the three. He didn't know the other two particularly well, but he greeted them nonetheless. "Something going down?", he then asked, noticing Mairead and the others. He'd heard some...interesting rumours about the former, but he tried to not take too much stock in hearsay.

Gryffindor Tower / Re: [30 Mar] Mouldy Malfoy and Home for Holidays! (Open)January 25, 2022, 11:27:34 AM She had a point, as being a former Death Eater, one would think he had seen his fair share of frightening occurrences. Including Voldemort himself, and then of course there were the Dementors. he shuddered at the thought, hoping to never have to see one of those accursed things for himself. To think that they once let them loose on prisoners in Azkaban...
His thoughts were returned to much more pleasant things, as Heather made her statement on his love of creatures and he returned her grin. Yes, he was much more likely to be found at the pens than anywhere else in Hogwarts, outside of school hours and curfew, and he made a point of learning all he could about them. They then moved on to the fact that Malfoy had kids, which was something that he previously hadn't realised. He often forgot that the professor's had lives and families outside of the castle walls, just as the students did. Well, maybe not 'forgot' as such, it wasn't something he thought about much. "Maybe that's his greatest fear then? Something happening to his kids? Can't really see him as a family man, but you never know", he added his own two cents, watching as Mairead seemed to hover in the open doorway. Had she changed her mind about her little trip? Apparently so, as Fortuna Major berated her for her sudden indecisiveness and she returned to the common room, slumping back down onto the couch. "Change of plan?", he asked, perhaps a little obviously. She then mentioned wondering when Malfoy's kids would likely be starting Hogwarts. "Who knows? I wouldn't want to be at the same school my dad teaches at, but there's not a lot of choice, is there? They'll get some stick, that's for sure", he added his own thoughts. Yes, Mouldy Malfoy himself wasn't exactly popular, and some kids could be cruel. He hoped none of them would be in Gryffindor, for their sakes. 3
Forbidden Forest and Environs / Re: [24 Mar] Fantastic Beasts and Friends to Find Them (Rylan/Open)December 16, 2021, 10:15:50 AM Rylan could talk all day about creatures, but he tried not to out of respect for his friends and their boredom levels. Some were more willing to listen and humour him than others, with Tim being one of those he felt as though he could push his luck a little with. One would have thought the the Ravenclaw would have had enough from his own brother, but perhaps that gave him a little more appreciation for the subject (even though he hadn't taken it).
Watching as his breath turned into a mist not like that which already blanketed the ground beneath, Rylan would be glad when spring came and things started to warm up a bit. He liked to consider himself adaptable, when it came to certain temperatures, but that didn't necessarily mean he was a fan of the cold! "Yeah, something like that!", he laughed at the description of blast ended skrewts, but decided against a mini lecture on the subject, as his friend had another question. "I think they are, that's why I wanted to come along and see what's what. We're supposed to raise them over the year, but I hear not many get as far as that.", he answered matter of factly. "I wanted to squeeze in a little extra curricular study. I know they're not much to look at, stink of rotting fish and have a temper to match, but I think they're kind of cool." Rylan had strange idea of what was 'cool' or 'cute', seeing as he tended to be fond of anything that many found repulsive, but he liked to think that was part of his own unique charm! He still wanted a per streeler too, because why not have a pet that could probably melt your hand and/or kill you? "Hello, professor", he greeted as Onuris himself called out . He didn't see Marcel, but supposed he was around somewhere. "Yeah, this is Tim", he then introduced his friend. "Just came to see if any of the skrewts were still with us", he added, just as the sound of firing stinger indicating that there still seemed to be a good number of them still within the mortal realm. 4
Gryffindor Tower / Re: [30 Mar] Mouldy Malfoy and Home for Holidays! (Open)December 13, 2021, 09:13:34 AM After the debacle with Professor 'Mouldy' Malfoy in the Great Hall, Rylan had returned to the common room with his fellow Gryffindors. He had a little more packing to do for the holidays, but he had decided to hang out in the common room for a bit first. He knew that suspicion for the act that had cost Malfoy his dignity fell squarely on his House, and it didn't help that most of them just couldn't help but laugh! He felt a little bad for him, and wished that whoever was responsible hadn't used the Dark Mark, of all things, but the way he has made his exit...
He had to admit, it was a little odd that a prefect of all people was discussing this, but when she asked what he thinked. Oh well, he had seemingly joined in the discussion just by being there, although when asked he had been distracted by the question of how to trap a boggart. "I think the Dark Mark was a little much, but boggarts? I don't actually know, but would be interesting to find out! I'm more of a creatures guy than spirits and apparitions, but I guess it all goes hand in hand." Was that what she had meant? "Anyhow, it's got to be something really dumb if the guy worked for the Dark Lord himself", he then agreed. Maybe Harry Potter, the one who had defeated Malfoy's former master and later became an auror? He did wonder if some of that story had been exaggerated a little though. Also, why were they conspiring against him? He decided against asking, as it was no secret that he wasn't exactly most people's favourite teacher. 5
Forbidden Forest and Environs / Re: [24 Mar] Fantastic Beasts and Friends to Find Them (Rylan/Open)December 12, 2021, 05:00:06 PM So Tim had no problem accompanying him...provided that he didn't cover him in dung. Made sense.
"Fair enough, but can't make any rash promises!", he shrugged back, before grinning at the other male. Expert, him? Hardly, but he wanted to learn and grow in his chosen field, and he had asked to have a go with some of the beasties that were a little more difficult to earn trust and respect from. He was under no pretense that he was special and could just magically do so (that wasn't how magic worked, he figured), but that was why he wanted to try. "I'm not sure, I kind of asked for a challenge. We've been studying unicorns though, and so far only the lasses have been able to get anywhere near the adults. I wondered if there was anything different about that behaviour if they were exposed to certain people from a young age", he answered, careful not to waffle on and bore his friend. "We've also been studying nifflers and blast ended skrewts. We've been raising the latter, so I kind of wanted to see how mine was doing too." If it hadn't been killed or otherwise gone to meet its maker, that is. "So yeah, unless Onuris himself shows up, the plan is to check on the skrewt. Oh, unless he he has some streelers for me to see!" Okay, so that wasn't all that likely, considering how venomous they were, but ever since his younger days he'd been making friends with slugs, snails and all manner of garden pests. Still, they hadn't gotten around to those yet, but maybe he would be allowed a sneak peek? 6
Forbidden Forest and Environs / Re: [24 Mar] Fantastic Beasts and Friends to Find Them (Rylan/Open)December 12, 2021, 09:58:47 AM Though he normally enjoyed a lie in on the weekends, he had been given an offer he really couldn't refuse! He could have, he supposed, but who in their right mind would turn down the chance for some practical, extracurricular study? Not that he had ever claimed to have a 'right mind', but growing up around rescued and rehabilitated animals meant that he had developed something of a passion for the care and conservation of of wildlife in any shape or form! That was why he wished to study and make a future career in magizoology, to study and conserve animals unlike those he had grown up with.
So when his favourite professor had given him this opportunity to do just that (and maybe help out a little getting that much needed O.W.L), he was glad to take him up on the offer. He wasn't alone either, as one of his best friends had agreed to accompany him, even though he hadn't even elected to take CoMC. He had known Tim's brother, Ambrose, an older student whom he had considered a mentor of sorts and even had been in his House! Tim himself was a Ravenclaw, but with him being in his year, it made sense that they had been introduced and spent a lot of time together. Any opportunity to hang out with any of his friends was also highly sought after, though he wondered just what it would be that they were about to be introduced to. They had been studying unicorns (though he had yet to try and approach either and adult or foal) and nifflers, along with attempting to raise blast ended skrewts (his wasn't dead yet by some miracle). He also had a love for streelers (and snails in general) and so wanted to meet a dragon, but... Time meanwhile seemed to be doing well in his own chosen field of study. Healing was a noble cause too, and he often wondered if magical veterinary medicine was a thing he might be interested in. Healing witches and wizards probably meant keeping more limbs and other extremities attached a bit longer though. "Good for you, marra1!", he enthusiastically congratulated his friend after being brought up to speed on his correspondence with the Deputy Head Healer. "That should keep you busy enough then", he then added. Though he was all for enjoying the holidays, one thing he supposed they had in common was that they liked to keep busy. Maybe that was one of the reasons why the Sorting Hat had struggled a little on whether he should be Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff or Gryffindor. "I'd like that", he answered when it was mentioned that he should try and visit had some point during the holidays. He had yet to decide if he would do the same in his shoes or stick around for NEWTs. There would be time yet though, he decided as they approached the tent. "Thanks for coming with me, by the way", he then thanked his friend. Even though he wasn't studying this subject, he had agreed to go with him, and that meant something. 1 - mate, friend in Rylan's local dialect 7

He has somewhat shaggy brown hair and grey/blue eyes. Outside of his Hogwarts uniform, he can be seen in casual attire such as jeans, t-shirts, hoodies and sneakers. He usually has a calm demeanor and tone of voice, owing to his laid back nature, with his local accent being quite prominent when he speaks. Looking at him, one would assume that he was always relaxed and would maybe take him for a slacker. He would have you know that this is not true! Personality Description: Rylan is usually pretty cheerful and laid back, always trying to see the bright side of any situation. This doesn't meant that he will let people walk all over him though, as he can also be headstrong to the point of impulsiveness. Thankfully, he has mostly learned to curb these tendencies, preferring to learn as much as possible before jumping into a situation. When this isn't possible though, he won't back down from correcting perceived wrongdoing. People, animals and even some creatures, he will be there to lend a helping hand if things get rough, though he prefers wit and sarcasm to using his fists (or a wand). From a young age, Rylan was raised in a household that rescued animals (regular ones, that is), so he learned to be responsible quite early in life. Although he would much rather be hanging out with friends, he will put in the time to study, should he feel so inclined. Rather stubborn with his morals and principles, it can be quite hard to change his mind once it is made up. Still, he lives by the words "always try to be nice, but never fail to be kind". Loyalty and trust are very important to him, but so is taking a stand for what one believes in, unafraid to be whatever he needs to be to succeed and make a difference. History: Rylan was born in the north east of England, the only child of a muggle man and a pure blood witch. His mother's side of the family disowned her, as they valued their pure bloodedness and were disgusted by her choice to marry a muggle. His father had already lost his parents, so it was just the three of them. At least, human wise. For as long as he could remember, there had always been animals in and around their house, ranging from cats and dogs to the more unusual reptiles and amphibians. These animals were usually rescued and in foster care, although they did have a few pets that they had decided to keep over the years. As a child, he often played with the slugs and snails that made their way into the garden too, and still has a soft spot for the slimy critters. His father was well aware of his mother's magic, and of the fact that he may too develop magical abilities as he got older. While raised primarily within the muggle world, with even his mother refraining from using magic unless necessary, magic was never kept a secret from him, so that he may understand and hone his abilities to avoid problems further down the line. Despite this, he never felt as though he was too different from the other kids, having quite a few friends at school. Though he has a disdain for violence, that didn't mean he would let others get away with trying to bully him (or anyone else, for that matter). After receiving his acceptance letter for Hogwarts, even more of the magical world was explained to him, so that he would be prepared when his time came to board the Hogwarts Express and really delve into the other side of his heritage. Though disappointed that he wouldn't be able to attend school with his muggle friends, he was nevertheless excited to learn to use his magic properly and to discover a whole other side of himself. Classes:
How Do You Fit Into Your House?: Though he is loyal and cares deeply for others (both magical and non magical), Rylan is nevertheless headstrong and fights for what he believes in. He won't back down easily from a cause he feels is worthwhile, protecting those who may need a little help to protect themselves. He has been known to throw himself in harms way if that means keeping others safe, but he really does try to think things through. Writing Sample: After the excitement of the Quidditch match, Rylan felt that Ravenclaw had definitely earned their victory. He felt bad for Hufflepuff, as it seemed that luck just hadn't been on their side. It was almost as if they had been jinxed to throw the game, and he was glad that he wouldn't be eating at the Hufflepuff table tonight. Helping himself to some meat and potatoes from the myriad of food choices that had appeared, the general mood varied, from the excitement of the victorious Ravenclaws to the understandably more subdued Hufflepuffs. Still, each of the four elongated tables reamined packed with hungry students, though some would maybe feel more like eating than others. "Hey, Hufflepuff got really unlucky, yeah?", he spoke perhaps a little too brightly to his fellow his fellow Gryffindors. Some of his housemates may have been rooting for them, but it was what it was and at the end of the day, he was just trying to make a little conversation. A funny old game though, was quidditch. Sum up your character in one paragraph: Rylan is a young man from the North East of England (County Durham, to be precise) and was raised primarily in the muggle world. He has always been aware of magic, thanks to his magical mother, but was always taught to keep himself in check and to keep magic a secret. He grew up surrounded by animals that had been rescued from various situations, usually before their transfer to actual facilities or new homes. Though all of these were non magical, he has a growing interest in the magical kind as is hoping to one day become a renowned magizoologist of some kind. Headstrong and determined, he is not easily wavered from his goals and though a loyal friend, will always try to act in instances of injustice. Nevertheless, he is usually easy going and has something of a dry, witty sense of humour. |
