"Hey guys!" Greeted Meredith. Her birdcage earrings jangled as she came to a stop by the table. One hand clasped her bag strap. The other clasped Blake's hand as they had squeezed through the crowd. Her fingers were circled in rings as normal. She let go of her boyfriend's hand to hug and kiss her friends in turn. Giving each a compliment on their appearance.

"Anyone need a drink?" Meredith asked. Then got the feeling the girl she did not know had just asked the same. Was she Ambrose's girlfriend? "Hey. Meredith. This is Blake. Nice to meet you. You going to get drinks?" She smiled. Turned to Blake. "What did you want? Or do you want to come see?" She asked.

Meredith was shocked. Her mouth made a little 'oh' shape. She clung to her satchel strap. Zeta's words brought her out of her daze.
"Yes. Exactly." Agreed Meredith. "Come on. Let's get out of here." She moved to Blake's side. Looped her arm through his again. Clasped his hand. Reassuring. Supportive.

Heather and Zeta were happy. Kelvin and Blake looked like the world had ended.
"Blake?" Called Meredith. "Are you okay?" Now stood alone near to the mirror. She fiddled with her rings. Worried. Looked at Zeta and Heather. Who were with the boys. Who were walking away. She took a deep breath. Shifted her green satchel on her shoulder. Set her chin proudly. Stood before the mirror. Swallowed.

Meredith saw herself. Like a normal mirror. But then her reflection smiled. Turned on the spot. In Hogwarts robes. Shiny Head Girl pin. Holding a set of outstanding exam results. Cup for best results. Her parents smiling behind her. Friends. Was that an invitation letter to Laevenstrome? Did someone kiss her on the cheek! Her heart's desire was success. That was true this year. But Meredith stepped nearer. "Then what?" Asked Meredith. But this mirror showed her heart's desire not her future. It could not make up her mind for her. So her mirror self tapped its temples and its heart and winked. What? "Ah!" She dragged her eyes away. She did not want to see something sad like Blake and Kelvin. "Thank you." Meredith bowed her head politely to the curator. Hurried from the mirror after her friends. "Wait. What did you see?"

Meredith took on extra responsibility with the dueling club in Sixth Year. Wanted to be the club president. So in the spring Meredith asked Professor Storm for some more tuition believing her skill and talent will make him choose her. She also tried to raise her game with other subjects, and stretched her time. Ultimately she decided that to become Head Girl she needed to look broader. Also her friend was well suited to the role. Better to delegate. She dropped her intent with the dueling club but remains an active supporting member.

Meredith rolled her eyes at her best friend. Looked back at Blake and smirked. He took her hand. Offered his arm. Like a gentleman. He had manners. Proper pureblood. They got out of the way to let Heather take point. Zeta jumped in second. Meredith felt electric. Anticipation. Excitement. Nerves?

She watched Heather step up. Lean forward. Gape. Laughed loudly. Call out.

"Not sure you said it loud enough Heath!" Cried Meredith. Laughed too. "She has like a permanent sonorous charm. I swear." Said Meredith to Blake. "You must hear her coming on the pitch. If I see myself with earmuffs on because I want her to shut up I will hex her... What do you think you will see?"

"Unless it is on her face she will need to strip off..." Laughed Meredith shaking her head. "You going to get a SAWS tattoo? Solidarity with werewolves?" She suggested. Zeta was all about SAWS. "If Ravenclaw win this year are you going to get the cup on a bicep?" Meredith reached over and squeezed Blake's arm.

"Maybe." Said Meredith. "I have not made up my mind yet." Her dad did not make her work there in the holidays. He offered. She did sometimes. But she could be a healer too. Or an auror. Or anything she wanted to be. Maybe she would be a singer and harpist and travel the world.

"Maybe I should borrow your books and see if inspiration strikes." She smiled at Kelvin. Shrugged. Someone's cat dashed past them pursuing a mouse. A portrait of a little girl let out a high squeal. "Good cat!" Praised Meredith. Even though she had no idea whose cat it was.

"You are going to the museum? Right?" She changed the subject. "I swear if I go one day and go back the next I will see different things. My heart cannot make its mind up what it most desires ever."

"Heth?" Meredith looked back. Brightening. Professor Greyfriar loomed. Meredith smiled innocently. "Call of nature Professor. On our way back." Straightened her bag on her shoulder. Walked purposefully back to the queue.

"Where have you been?" Asked Heather. "Thought you skived off." Put her arms around her bestie's shoulders. Hugged it out. Let go. "Not that Blake, Kelvin and Zeta are not excellent company." Winked at Blake.

"Thanks Heath." Said Meredith. Smiled to herself. If he chose Heather she would just set her sights on Head Girl. Be there to take over if she flipped out. Heather was her friend but her friend had weaknesses. Meredith had none. Of course not.

"Well he will decide either way." She shrugged and smiled at her friend. "And better one of us than someone else like Esther or Lovella." Meredith rolled her eyes. "Or be bats like Amara." Meredith shared a dormitory with them all. Perfectionists and psychopaths! Heather would be better than any of them.

"Why? Do you like him?" Asked Meredith. Why did Zeta Pepper care if Blake Knight fancied Meredith? Only cared if she was jealous. Or another Hufflepuff fancied him. It was enough to drag her off. Like all Blake had done was put his arm around her. Hardly gone in for a snog. Or ignored the others.

"Of course I noticed." Mere flicked her hair back over her shoulders. "But I hardly think he is going to see us married in the mirror Zeta. If you do then whatever." Mere shrugged and smirked. She had suspected. Yes. But Mere was not unaware of boys looking. They were in the sixth year. Hogwarts was a boarding school. She was not going to tell Blake to go away. She was going to enjoy the attention.

"Haaa. Funny Watkins." Meredith laughed sarcastically. "Why read about Muggles inventing our stories. Like you study history to get all the real stories." She shrugged. 'Real' was subjective when it came to Witch Weekly. She knew. "Are they ever accurate? Like a squib author pretending to be Muggle?" Meredith peered into an empty classroom as they passed. "Would you ever write one? For Muggles? Do they make any money selling them to muggles? I suppose they must." Meredith had an OWL in Muggle Studies. But she had not studied the niche of muggles writing fantasy stories about a world they did not know existed right beside them.

"Fun. Yeah." Agreed Meredith. But with uncertainty. She was looking forward to this. But also not. Your greatest desire. Not always known to yourself. Exciting. A little scary. What if she never made it? Never reached her heart's desire? Was that not the most depressing thing? Why was Blake fiddling with her quill? He still had his arm about her. Did she just laugh? Was she blushing?

Zeta grabbed her hand. Meredith snapped to. "Save our spot!" Repeated Meredith. Recognizing the international sign of a girl talk. She did not feel lady-like ducking under the rope but Zeta had hold of her hand. Pulling firmly. "You better give me a summary!" She exclaimed to the Ravenclaws. Standing up. Waving her notebook and quill in same hand. Pointing her finger at the exhibition notes.

They rounded a column. "Hey where's the fire. I am coming." Meredith tugged her hand free. Curious. She opened her bag to put her things back.

Meredith listened with two thirds of an ear. She was reading the exhibition information. As they inched down the long rope-line they passed drawings and descriptions. She had an essay to write. So she made neat notes in a pocket book. Self inking quill from miniature peacock feather.

"Tell me about it." Complained Meredith. Agreeing with Kelvin. She had to wait until June to be of age. Never wish your life away but still. Floo powder got in your hair. Meredith turned back to the group. Smiled at the boys. Looked at Zeta.

"Send me home with tunes you can't sing." Sang Meredith. Not loudly. But nicely. She had a pretty voice. "That's Crows right? I heard them on the wireless the other night. What time Saturday?" Meredith did not care if she was inviting herself. It was a gig. She would make Heather come with her.

Heather could side-eye Meredith all she liked. Meredith had this. She could organize a tournament single handed. Without her wand. Heather was Heather. Meredith loved her friend but knew all her shortcomings. There could only be one Captain. Just like there could only be one Head Girl. Heather was no competition there.

"Thank you Professor." Meredith gave a little bow. Manners. She had been brought up with them. Meredith elbowed Heather. Went back to their desks. Picked up her things. Left in silence. Not wanting to say anything the Professor could hear. Nothing until the door closed.

"I knew he would say yes." Said Meredith. Once they were alone. "He definitely thinks we are captain material too." She smoothed out her uniform. It had no creases. She straightened her prefect pin. "You should be Captain." She said to Heather. "You love dueling. It is literally all you talk about some days. I bet he will choose you."
