Happy 13th Anniversary! A look back and a skip forward 2021 was another wild year, and just to make forms extra confusing, it was also the year that we shifted into 20 12 here at Absit Omen. We've had 12 years of writing stories together! This January, we shared our favorite moments with the Owlies and created an anniversary thread (featuring a character gallery) for all our well wishes! In the interest of inspiration, we asked and you voted a resounding Oui! From May, we're skipping the summer months and starting fresh with August 2012 and the new Hogwarts school year in September. The new timeline is open now! Jump right into posting, or chat about plots in Plot Development or via Discord. You're welcome to continue your threads from the spring or post any necessary summer threads in the pensieve as well. Next to the calendar above, we've included June through July dates in gray for reference. Are there any plots or summer events you'd like to wrap up or refer to? Here are some ideas: - Plot with us in the poll thread, where we discuss plots we'd like to conclude or advance in the fall.
- Create a reference thread for your characters, such as Niobe's Where are they now?
- In-character, post a snapshot
- In-character, start a summer rumor or send a postcard in Correspondence
- If it has a specific date, tag it as usual. If it's kind of a summary, tag it "Summer 2012"
Hogwarts 2012/2013 School! We barely had time to miss you. Students, depart from Kings Cross Station on September 2nd and join the Welcome Feast and Sorting in the Great Hall! Classes begin on September 3rd.
Featured - Dobby Swap & Owlies! Last January, we offered the Owlies superlatives survey, a chance to highlight some of our favorite moments, threads, and characters. Despite the Ravenclaw-essay length of the survey, several of you responded, and the results are in! Check out the slideshow and feel free to share some laughs in the thread. Also, thank you for another wonderful Dobby Swap! Seven of you participated, creating beautiful artwork, fashion sets, avatar sets, and even an Arithmancy analysis. Dobby is impressed, as always!
Below are several updated plots, discussions, and new characters! Plots - Return of the Mirror of Erised - During the April holiday, students take a school trip to find themselves (and land some extra credit).
- Moon Madness - Lucinda runs away during the April full moon! Will she be caught?
- Tenacious - ELF (Eradicate Lycanthropy Foundation) hides nefarious plans behind its harmless acronym. Also, will Layton get his comeuppance? (Yes please!)
- ELF - Eradicate Lycanthropy Foundation - A helpful summary and continuing conversation from the 'Moon Madness' and 'Tenacious' plotting threads above
- Muses Be Disquieting - A patient at St.Mungo's has turned up missing important memories! Will the origin of Muse be discovered?
- Out of the Woods - Savvina Katopodis starts to recover her memories and find a new home.
Discussions Personal Plots and New Characters - Write with Erika, who brought back the wonderful Blake Knight!
- Write with Nuri and her new wixes, Salvador and Salma!
- Please welcome Rylan Marsh, a Gryffindor 4th Year played by new member, Fayt!
- Say hello to the Abbotts! Jules Abbott, an Unspeakable played by Kit; Heather Abbott, a Gryffindor 6th Year also played by Kit; and Ivy Abbott, a Hufflepuff 1st Year played by Milly!

Happy 13th, Absit Omen!A lot has happened in 13 years! We've met so many writers and their characters, filling up our little corner of the internet with stories. 54That's how many times, by word count, we have written enough to equal the length of the seven-book HP series. That's about 378 novels' worth of made-up spells, squicky curse injuries, invented government nonsense, unsupervised children, workplace romance, new uses for gillyweed, nights out at the bar, and reading by the lake. The rough estimate wordcount at AO: 59,536,329 1,414+That's how many date tags we've made, meaning that's how many days at least one thread has taken place! Other numbersDiagon Alley: most popular location for threads Sasha Snow: most prolific character by posts 16,182: total role-play topics since we started 9: total number of Give Me Your Best Shot threads 8,853: total number of wiki pages 58,749: total number of wiki edits Did you know we're internet famous? Our BBCode color list is the top result when searching for BBCode colors. House Points 2012-2013 In the entrance hall of the great castle, four giant hourglasses sift through gems of ruby, topaz, sapphire and emerald, marking the points earned and lost by students for the four Houses of Hogwarts.
All Hogwarts staff may award and deduct house points. Prefects and the Head Students may suggest awards and deductions from their own house, pending approval by the student's Head of House or Headmaster. Replies to this thread should clearly state the HOUSE, TOTAL POINTS won or lost per house, as well as a breakdown of WHICH STUDENT won or loss the points, along with the REASONS WHY points were awarded or deducted. Please wait until THE END OF A CLASS THREAD to post points, rather than each time your professor rewards them- this will keep all points awarded per class in one spot. **NOTE: Please just post points won or lost - do not add or subtract them from current house totals. Attendence: Students may earn +/- 5 points for writing in class threads. Do not deduct points from inactive students for class absences. Merit & Discipline: Awarding and deducting of house points for a variety of triumphs and trip-ups both objective and subjective is a time-honored Hogwarts tradition. The most famous or infamous of actions seem to cap at +/- 50 points.

The Owlie Awards are here! It's time to play the music! It's time to light the lights! It's time to catch the Owlies for the Owlies awards tonight! It's time to put on make up! It's time to dress up right! It's time to raise the curtain on the Owlies awards tonight! The nominations are in! Join us in celebrating what we do here at the Owlie awards!Following an innovative and glamorous red carpet that simultaneously evokes both the Met Gala and cozy book nooks, nominees and their plus-ones are treated to whatever heart-lifting and soul-knitting finger foods and drinks one could wish for. Magically seated all together regardless of location, timezone, or shaky wifi connection, nominees settle in for the awards ceremony.... Happy and tired, the winners and their friends shuffle off with fragrant gift bags to a series of after-parties in all those places we'd love to go, never too tired, always in just the right conversation, always the right song playing. We bump into all our favorite people, our hair still looks great at the end of the night. Now, where to put all of these owl trophies?

World Building New and Updated Plots Personal Plots! Plot Spotlight - Happily Ever...?Balfour Spectre and Johann Storm are finally tying the knot at their manor in Edinburgh, Scotland! The wedding promises to be a large and sprawling affair, and anyone with even a glancing association with either wizard is invited to attend. Expect good food, lots of drink, and an obscene amount of dancing. When it comes to the Spectres, there is always another seat at the table. Festivities aside, it's rumoured that a particular villain in disguise might be attending. Once the main thread has been posted, writers are cordially invited to start their own personal threads at the manor on the special day if desired. Plot Thread: LINK

Diversity & Inclusion For the past year (and well before), Curators and members alike have been taking steps to make Absit Omen a place where everyone feels welcome regardless of race, gender, sexuality, disability, religion, and nationality. Most writers at AO are White and from the United States and UK, including 2 out of 3 current Curators. We understand this can create a harmful bias, despite good intentions. Curators deeply appreciate when members point out when where we're falling short. We still have a long way to go. Here are some ways that staff and members have tried to accomplish this goal of inclusion. - Requiring avatars be the same race and ethnicity of the characters they depict.
- Doing better at reading new characters for problems with stereotypes.
- Posting clear statements about AO's values concerning diversity and inclusion, including a direct confrontation to JK Rowling's transphobia, anti-semitism, homophobia, and fatphobia.
- Posting clear Discord guidelines on what topics are acceptable.
- Accommodating the optional sharing of pronouns in Discord.
- New: The Character Guidelines page now includes a statement about higher standards when writers create characters outside of their own identities. Curators are going to make an earnest effort to do better.
- New: Creating a library of links in the Character Development forum where anyone may share outside resources concerning how to write characters of marginalized identities, and just generally be better informed about those lived experiences. These resources are available for anyone creating new characters.
- New: Continuing to simplify the process for new members to generally reduce the barriers to entry, to make it easier to join overall.
New Forum, Discord and Wiki Features We've had some technological advances since the last FF in November - New BBCode for posts
- New mobile-friendly and updated design on the Wiki
- Self-assigned character-type membergroups in Discord. You can join groups for Hogwarts, Ministry, St. Mungo's, werewolves, etc which allows us to easily @ everyone who might be interested in a plot.
- Self-assigned membergroups for pronouns. It's an easier way to share your pronouns than using your nickname.
Don't forget: Owlies! In January, we announced AO's first awards show, the Owlies! Please send in your nominations so we can pour out some love for each other. There are many categories, but you do not have to fill them all out. Just do as much as is fun and manageable for you![/list]

Inclusive Character Development Resources for writing characters of marginalized identities other than your own. Our Character Guildelines state that members should take care and effort when writing characters outside of their own idenities, especially considering matters of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, culture, disability, and religion. This thread contains a list of outside reading to support that. Please feel welcome to submit your own using the form at the bottom of this thread. Would you like to chip in to AO's web hosting bill this year? Our webhosting bill for the year is £119.99. (We are hosted by Krystal Hosting now it seems to be working out very well.) When the bill comes up, sometimes we ask around and see if anyone would like to chip in. Any amount is welcome and helpful. Contact Knox/Niobe by PM or in Discord if you'd like to contribute and we'll coordinate. As always, donating to the cost is entirely optional and we have no expectation anyone give money or feel pressured.

Happy 12 Years!Wow, we're old! (old as the oldest first-year) Calling all old and new AO members! For our 12th anniversary, we've set up a fun, optional awards survey we call The Owlies! In this survey, we've listed superlatives for different categories of AO characters: kids/teenagers, adults, NPC's, and inactive/retired. We've also got categories for threads, plots, and writers as well! Come vote on which character is most in need of a happy plot and which untrue rumor is your favorite. We'll share the results once the votes are in! Select the code below and submit it via personal message to the Absit Omen RPG account. A few things to keep in mind... - Voting is out-of-character
- ...but if your characters are talking to you, go ahead and include a few quotes from their perspective
- Your answers can span all twelve years that Absit Omen has been active. Check out the Cast of Characters, Wiki, and Tags for help finding characters, plots, and threads.
- Fill in as many answers as you like for each question
- Add your own formatting and decoration, if you like!
- Feel free to leave some fields blank if you're stuck
- Did we miss an amazing opportunity to add a superlative or category or whatever? Probably! We added a blank field at the end of the survey for any extra awards you'd like to give
- When we present the results, we'll focus on nominations first and foremost. It'll be less about who or what got the most votes, and more about who or what got nominated and why. Count on silliness.
Select the code below and submit it via personal message to Absit Omen RPG!

- April 2nd through the 13th, Hogwarts students may go home for the holiday if they have permission from their parent(s)/guardian(s).
Personal Plots! Plot Spotlight - Two-Faced Escape Attempt!Who doesn't love a good prison break? Or in this case, a clever and duplicitous endeavour to free the love of your life - one Mortimer Gamp - from St.Mungo's clutches. Kit's villainous Lyra Gamp has been parading around wizarding society, using her metamorphmagus skills to disguise herself as her eldest son Orion. Perhaps your character has flirted with danger in a harmless blind date event, or been so unlucky to have the wool pulled over their eyes by one's own mother. Either way, what a fantastic masquerade, leading up to an explosive confrontation at the hospital - though not without its hapless victims and the clever siblings who finally spotted the trick. With Lyra now in custody, will there be peace for the Gamps or is there still trouble to come? AU Plot Spotlight - Pirates! It is 1692. Wixes and muggles are sailing the open sea and settling new lands. The Salem witch trials have kicked off, and the Wizard's Council has just issued a new decree: the Statue of Secrecy. There's no better time to be a pirate! We're a wixxy, muggly, secretive crew and we're recruiting the best and the brightest (and the oddest and scraggliest) to join. Now. Please? Also, we need an oracle - our dear captain, Barnabas Cuffe says so. If you'd rather stay on land, there's lots of opportunity in the port of St. Cyprian. Come join us! You don't need to make a full bio to play. We have an open thread on the ship and an open thread at the pub. Rules/guidelines here!

Rules & Info Updates We made a minor but significant change to our Welcome block on the home page of Absit Omen. This Welcome block is visible to all guests, so in case any members missed it, you can read it below! The changes we made are italicized. Please let the curators know if there's anything else that would be helpful to include on Absit Omen. Absit Omen is an online Harry Potter role-playing game set in J.K. Rowling's Wizarding World. Writers from all over the world gather here to write exciting plots together.
Though we write in a setting created by J.K. Rowling, we do not condone the author's transphobia and intolerance. Absit Omen is a safe space for liberal ideas. We encourage writers of diverse backgrounds, cultures, religions, and orientations to join and to create plots and characters that reflect their perspectives.
It's we, the writers, who direct our stories. We also added a new bullet to our Code of Conduct: Absit Omen is a safe space for liberal ideas. Our Discord and out-of-character topics reflect this. In our Discord General chat, if you are sharing political news or articles that might be sensitive to members, we encourage you to use Spoiler tags and briefly describe it. We've included a link to Spoiler tags at the top of the Discord General chat for your reference (you can find other formatting tags in that link as well).

New/Updated Plots! Personal Plots!
SPOTLIGHT: SAWS REVIVAL 2012 Welcome to a new chapter of Students Against Werewolf Segregation (SAWS) at Hogwarts! This time, the controversial werewolf rights group is being headed by sixth year Hufflepuff Zeta Pepper and her band of friends! Although Headmaster Greyfriar himself is a werewolf, the SAWS revival faces new challenges in the form of power struggles and younger, skeptical members - to say nothing of its moody werewolf members Lucinda Temple and Greer Grant! There were, however, far more important things... And, after having a snap coffee and scone with one of Hufflepuff's most accomplished daughters, that thing was justice. Justice for werewolves at Hogwarts.Zeta Pepper in Do You Love Justice?"Every action has an equal and opposite reaction, isn’t that right Zeta?” He stepped forward leaning a bit but fully accepting the light. If anything, Zeta needed him. Rigel didn’t think she could lead let alone command respect or shut it down as he has practiced before. She’d get torn up alive if things got political.Rigel Acrux in And the Fire on the Tongue - First SAWS Meeting "I-" She started but cleared her throat, wanting to to sound somewhat stronger. "I'm sorry everyone..I sort of...ruined this meeting." She took a breath but still sounded shaky. "We can continue still, but I'll...make sure I do better for the next one, hopefully it isn't leading up to a full moon when we have the meeting." New Theme After 8 years, Absit Omen has a new theme called Pensieve. It's meant to be easier to read in general, much easier to use on mobile screens, and be easier to use for people with disabilities. - All users have been switched to the new theme.
- The old theme is still available if you want to switch back. To switch back, go to your Profile > Modify Profile > Look and Layout. then choose Absit Omen 2011. (The custom colored themes have been disabled).
- The new theme accepts a bigger avatar size. If yours is looking grainy or blurry after the switch, you can upload a new one in Modify Profile > Forum Profile. The new size is 300 x 300px.
- We'll continue to add improvements and fix bugs as time goes on.
- Find a bug? Have an improvement to suggest? Send a note to the Curators or contact Niobe/Knox.

London to HogwartsMonday 2 January 2012 After a tumultuous first term and what was hopefully a restful winter holiday, it is time for all the students and staff to return to Hogwarts! The Hogwarts Express is waiting at Kings Cross station, Platform 9 3/4 hidden behind magical brick walls, is ready to relay them all to the chilly, waiting village of Hogsmeade. But what about that mysterious bug going around, that vanishes away a young wix magical capacity? Will it prove a barrier to this traditional transport? It's a long trip up to the Scottish highlands! Pass the time with pumpkin pasties, chocolate frogs or other tasty treats! You'll see Hogsmeade and those castle towers before you know it. Please use the board for all your train-related threads! It's time to go home to Hogwarts.

SPOTLIGHT: CONTESSA CLARENXIEUX
If you haven't met Contessa yet, now's the time! Our spotlight for this flier is newcomer Betsy's lovely first year! She's as formidable as first year's come, and an absolute delight to write with. When Contessa isn't killing it in lessons, she's doing an ace job in the Duelling Club and making friends as only a Slytherin can! "Contessa raised an eyebrow back at Sulwen, a cheeky glint to her eyes. "Something wrong Reid? Lighten up you wet blanket, can't you take a joke?"- Contessa with the sass - "It was young Contessa Clarencieux, after all, who was in a category of her own in most ways. If she engaged in some action or activity, Knox had learned it was not whimsy." - Knox Greyfriar - "He glanced at the book Contessa was reading - she was like him, she liked schoolwork." - Feliks Spectre - - & - * Honourable mention to Ignan Storm's sexy body.
New Faces, New Places Firstly, a warm welcome to new members Betsy and Tempest! We hope you're both settling in! New characters since our last flyer: New locations:
Thank You! A big thank you to Elle for helping us with our Avatar Registry and odd bits around the site! <3
