Physical Description:
Although he’s lived most of his life now with different faces, Leander hasn’t taken another pentral since he awoke in the Wold farmhouse in December. He looks older than his fifty years, with graying hair, a weathered face, pale pink skin, and bright blue eyes.

He has a remarkable singing voice: deep, vibrant, and mournful.

Personality Description:
It’s easy for a man like Leander Hunt to fall into fantasies. He wraps himself in stories and hates to let go. Stories about love that is strong and ever-lasting; about families that look out for each other instead of crumbling into dust; about heroes who are brave enough to risk everything for those that they love, but human enough that they can’t help but flounder and fail. He does small kindnesses for those that he hurts, as if occasional gentleness can make up for the agony that he causes.

Leander has always been the steady one, careful and restrained where his sister is sharp and unpredictable. He cared for the unicorns and managed the wards; she played with fire and scorched their enemies. Although she has always listened to him when he cautions her, they also both know that she’s the one who drives them forward. Despite his passivity, he was an equal partner in many of her crimes.

Since that fateful day in December, there’s been a small but noticeable change to Leander’s character. He is still quiet, still passive, still deferential to his sister. But it’s almost as if he’s watching the world now, instead of just observing it with mournful eyes as it passes him by.

History:
Once upon a time, there was a boy.

The details blend together like memories of a familiar storybook, half-forgotten from one’s childhood. Once upon a time, there was a boy, and he grew up in a small home (a hovel) with his father and mother and sister in a town that had once been sleepy (and was now dying as Muggles pressed in on all sides). The boy was quiet and dreamy (afraid), and his sister was always there for him, playing pretend and standing up to the monsters (he knew who the monsters really were).

Once upon a time, there was a boy, and he boarded the train to a magical castle a year after his sister. His love for his sister was the only thing that saved him from being a hat stall; he was sorted into Gryffindor (like her) and went to join his housemates (his sister) in the tower. Nothing could have been better for him than Hogwarts: he flourished there and made many friends (aside from those who hated his sister).

Once upon a time, there was a boy, who trusted his sister when she led him and his shy Ravenclaw friend alone to a tower. When he opened his eyes, his beloved sister took the blame (he let her), and she was forced to flee from the castle.

Once upon a time, there was a young man, who loved his fiancée very much. He was hers and she was his, and that was all that mattered for a time. They spun a life of their own together, away from the family that caused him pain and the parents that made her choose between different worlds. For a time, it seemed as if they’d found their happy ending.

That all came to a screeching halt the night that Lorelei turned up on their doorsteps.

Despite the years that have passed since then, the days that followed burn like a waypoint in Leander’s memories. The desperate search for help for Lorelei; the sharp, excruciating pain of Iona’s death; his sister, wearing his fiancée’s face, insisting that there was no other way. In his grief, he accepted her pleas: he couldn’t stand to lose his father, his girlfriend, and his sister too.

The days and months and years that followed were wrapped up in a fog. Flowers left by the lake (by a grave); faces borrowed (stolen) and discarded; refuge taken in a lake house (also stolen); stories spun to lessen his guilt and his grief. He looked out for his sister much as she always looked out for him, trying to ease her tempers and keep her from impaling herself on acrimony and rancor. He clung to what he could from the past: Ravenclaw colors in his bedroom (her colors; never his); flowers on the graves and candles near the portrait (her pentral); and sad memories of Iona’s song, drifting through the tower (her prison).

But every story starts anew.

Once upon a time, another boy came to the lake house. Leander hated him because he knew what he was; his sister soothed him that the other boy was necessary. And so they returned to playing pretend for a while: they were a family building a life together, a family that only grew when a young girl came to stay with them too. Leander knew what she was too, but it was easier to pretend to love her: she had Iona’s same upturned nose and finely arched brows, even if her hair was golden and not vibrant red. He called her dear and love and did his best to be kind to her.

But on the same day that a new chapter was supposed to open, everything changed again in an instant. He found Abigail and Calix in the tower with smothering fog, and then the darkness came for him. The Dementors might have taken his soul entirely, if it wasn’t for that waypoint set into his memories from long ago: the night that Iona died, when it had felt like a piece of him had been wrapped up and died with her.

The next few months passed in a haze.  Iona. He was trapped in a dream and not even his sister could wake him. Iona.

It wasn’t until that faithful day in December when it felt like a string finally snapped. Leander opened his eyes, whole and himself for what felt like the first time in a lifetime.

Describe your job duties and how you go about them:
Like his sister, Leander Hunt was an illegal potions dealer and party to many of her murders. The two siblings committed many of their crimes in the vicinity of the Lilly Lakehouse.

Elaborate on your expertise in your field:
Leander once had dreams of becoming a magizoologist, caring for the magical creatures that he loved.

Instead, he spent most of his life in service to his sister. He helped her with illegal potions and tended to their protective wards. He experimented with coaxing pentrals into the owls and other animals that they kept at the Lakehouse. And he was always the one who bled the unicorns.

Writing Sample:

Sum up your character in one paragraph:
Tangled up in the sorrows of his past, Leander Hunt has long been a willing accomplice in his sister’s crimes. Now, with Iona McBoid’s soul released and crossed over at last, he may finally come to terms with his grief.
