Title: [March 30] Another Critical Werewolf Induced Pain
Post by: Duce Alyx on March 08, 2014, 06:42:10 PM
Duce paced up and down the waiting room. She couldn't stand the fact that her father was lying in one of St.Mungos hospital beds. A couple of hours ago, she was just at Hogwarts, in her dormitory, but a owl from her dearest mum caught her off guard. She left school for emergency purposes and headed to St.Mungos, where her family wait patiently for her arrival. After a brief discussion of what was happening, Duce wanted to cry her eyes out. She couldn't believe that her father was attacked and bitten by a werewolf.

What seemed like hours, Duce finally calmed down. She sat next to her mother and hugged her tightly. She held her mother as she cried in the crook of her neck. Duce knew that this terrible event could led to other dangerous things, that's why she held her mother. She cradled her and wiped away the salinity waters they called tears. After comforting her mother, Duce turned to her older brother Jaeson, studying his guilty but saddened face.

"Will father be okay?" Jaeson asked in a hoarse tone.

"We have to have faith. Be hopeful. Let's hope that father will be just fine."

"But what if he is fine, but he turns i-into a---werewolf." Jaeson shuddered at his own words.

Duce choked as her brother said those words. She hoped that her father would turn out to be okay, but there was a good chance that he would become a werewolf . "He won't, well at least I hope not." Duce replied. "I'll still love father the same."

Jaeson nodded his head. This tragedy had an affect on every single family member, whether they showed it or not.

A tear slipped down Duce's pale face as she thought about her dear father. She really wanted everything to be normal once he was okay, but the thought of him turning was taking a big toll on her. Duce was affected emotionally, something that she didn't think she'll ever feel again.

This was something that threatened the feelings of everyone in the Alyx family.

Just out of the grief-stricken families line of sight stood a tall young man swathed in green robes, arms crossed and lips pursed. Only his dark eyes betrayed the emotions raging inside as he watched the heartbreaking scene unfold. He had seen this scene all too often, but that didn't make things any easier, especially when he imagined his father and sister in their shoes. Knowing what his attack had put his family through only served to make his own pain worse. But perhaps it was his personal experience with werewolf attacks that made him the best person to speak to grieving families. After all, he was probably one of the very few healers, if not the only one, who had a scar across his back that could be used to play a large scale game of tic-tac-toe.[1]

He hid and waited, unwilling to interrupt something so personal. A couple minutes passed when one of the Medi-witches slid up behind him and murmured in his ear "WCU is on the way. The father is stable but..." she paused and Kale just nodded. She didn't have to finish. If he was alive, he was either seriously scarred or infected, and by the tone of her voice and the look in her eye, it was the latter.

"Got it. I'll talk to them..." Kale said softly, before adding "Can you bring some tea for them? News like this needs a cup to cling to." She nodded and squeezed his shoulder reassuringly, as though he was the one needing the reassurance, before slipping away to retrieve a few cuppas. Swallowing past the lump in his throat, Kale quietly slid open the waiting room door and approached the family with as much respect and sympathy as was possible.

"Pardon me, ma'am, but are you Mrs. Alyx?" Kale inquired softly as he took a seat next to the grieving woman with tear stained cheeks and reddened eyes. When she nodded, he reached out and took her hand, continuing "Ma'am, my name is Kale Ferris. I am a healer-in-training on this floor and they sent me to talk to you about what happened tonight. Do you... feel you are... up to talking to me about it?" He knew better than to pressure her to talk about something so painful. He had seen people go completely catatonic when pressed too hard and he knew that the WCU would need the woman conscious. More importantly, her children needed her.

 1. Basically, the scars on his lower back form a criss cross pattern.

When all hope was lost, someone in this mist of the world sought the Alyx family's pain. The young man, named Kale, who now has taken a seat next to Duce's mum, asked her a question that everyone has been dreading since this tormenting night has started. Duce's mother never told her children the actual truth about what happened, she just mentioned bits and pieces of the whole story.  Fear glistened in Duce's eyes as she cocked her head towards her delusional mother. Her half parted lips wanted to speak, but the words wouldn't come out correctly. Her throat became dry and it burned with more and more fear. Duce glanced at her brother from the corner of her eye, he showed more curiosity than she had shown this whole entire time and this meant that there was more to it than they would ever imagine.

One of the Medi-witches brought a few cuppas of tea to the Alyx family, then she slipped away, allowing Kale to continue his discussion with the family. Kale gingerly handed Mrs. Alyx a cuppa and her shaky hands clutch the handle of the cup. Kale patiently waited for an answer, but Mrs. Alyx wasn't ready to speak just yet. However, Jaeson wasn't as patient, he wanted answers now.

"Tell the man what happened to father!" Jaeson said through clenched teeth. His sudden outburst caught the attention of everyone that was sitting around. Mrs. Alyx looked at her son in an almost heart-broken look.

Knowing that the truth has to come out sooner or later, Mrs. Alyx took a deep breath. She stared at Kale for a couple of more seconds, feeling the hair-raising gazes of her children. She sucked in the tears, but that didn't seem to work well. "He..well..he was working late at the MoM and he.. he was being followed after he left his office. The person that was following him was a were.. a werewolf and it attacked him. When he didn't come home, I was beginning to grow worried and I went to go look for him." Mrs. Alyx voice broke as she said those bitter words. "When I found him, he was tore up and unconscious. Help was already on its way before I could even react."

Different reactions occurred after Mrs. Alyx spoke. Kale gave an glimpse of  sympathy, whereas Jaeson clenched his fist tightly, but the only one that stood out was Duce's . Duce shook her head in disbelief. She couldn't take in the heart-wrenching truth. Duce was being naive, something that was getting in the way of reality and actuality.

Depression, anger, denial. Almost all the stages of grief were laid out in front of him like a smorgasbord of anguish and he needed to pick one to focus on first. The daughter was the one who worried him the most. The son and mother were obviously aware of what had happened and probably knew, or could guess, what he was about to say. But the girl, who had to be still in Hogwarts, just kept shaking her head in obvious disbelief. Kale knew that the denial stage could be one of the most harmful because of the impact left on the psyche when the truth finally hit.

He listened, his eyes soft with sympathy, as the mother did her best to rally herself and stutter out what happened. It was a pretty typical case. People often forgot that, despite being in the city, even the shortest walk to a nearby pub or a safe apparition spot didn't grant them immunity to werewolf attacks. He certainly had forgotten and thats why his back looked like a waffle iron and his dreams were haunted by howls and claws. Mr. Alyx was just an unlucky victim of the wrong place at the wrong time. It was unfortunate because his pain was just beginning. Unlike Kale, who had only been scratched, he was infected. He would have the scars and the nightmares, as well as a traumatizing transformation every full moon and the stigma attached to his kind.

Taking a deep breath, Kale prepared to tell them the bitter truth. It was a delicate subject at best. "Well before anything else, I want you to know that your husband is alive and in stable condition. He is, however, not fully conscious yet. After such a traumatic event the body often needs a period of rest and recuperation, so we are going to need to keep him for a couple of days."

"However, there is bad news as well..." Kale paused for a moment, mentally preparing himself for what was going to come next. People were unpredictable and sometimes their reaction to the news was to lash out at the messenger, as though Kale had infected the man himself. He eyed the sons clenched fist and prepared for the worst. Licking his lips, he went on "... He was bitten by the werewolf and while there is always a chance the curse won't be contracted, that chance is... highly unlikely. We are waiting for test results and will need him to go the Ministry by the next full moon in order to be sure, but there is a strong chance that... well.. that your husband is now a werewolf..."

He wanted to apologize for... everything. The attack, the curse, the inevitable stigma and discrimination their family would face. But he couldn't do it. Nothing he said would change what happened or even bring them peace. He just hoped he could show them just how much he understood and sympathized with their pain. How much he was there for them.
