A Wicked Start to Fall...

  • So the insanity begins with the Opening Feast where new professors are introduced and ickle firsties made to sit under the wizened old Sorting Hat.  Like horses out of the gates the classes start!  Herbology, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Ancient Runes, Divination, Potions, and Care of Magical Creatures, just to name a few.

What’s with all the pyromaniacs this term?  Everything from plants to potions are (or almost) going up in flames!  One particular incident may result in expulsion.

Speaking of expulsion, many have noticed that there is one missing among them.  Some may condemn the Headmistress’ decision while others applaud, but everyone can agree that the situation has caused quite a stir.  So much so it has pushed itself beyond the great heavy walls of Hogwarts.

In the silly world of adults, for a few their existences have finally been brought back to some degree of normalcy while for others the madness has just begun.  Still others are enjoying the pleasure of falling in love, slinking or dancing right into it.

Tune in next time to see where all this love and mayhem goes!

    New Plots!

A Ball! A Ball! She’s going to the Ball!: Discussion about the upcoming Halloween ball and other dances.
Calling Artists, Musicians and Fashionistas!: People needed for pop culture articles!
Faked Death: Lukas Quinn is back from the dead! With a bad case of amnesia, too. Luckily, Ringo is around to help.
Rebel Yell!: Darcy sets fire to the Hospital Wing to make a statement about Ollie, and as a result, is expelled.
Boys will be Boys: Devlin’s gang gets darker and more criminal.

Policy Changes!

  • We have some exciting new policy changes to announce.  Please read on so you can stay up-to-date.

    Images in Signatures

After the results of a site poll were overwhelmingly in favor, images in signatures are now allowed!  The rules governing them will be roughly the same that apply to avatars.
    • Size: No greater than 200px high by 600px wide
    • Must depict your character or information about your character.
Signature images are not required! For those of you who would rather not see images in signatures, we are working on installing a forum mod that would make images show up as a link instead.  We will let you know when that feature is available.

    New Applications to Be Hidden

From now on, we will be using a slightly different method of reviewing new character biographies.  We consider new character biographies to be more like rough drafts - almost all of them go through some changes.  We'd rather only staff see them until they are ready.
    • 1. New characters will post their bios as usual.
    • 2.  Staff will move the bio into a review area, review it and converse with the new character.
    • 3. Once it's finished it will be placed in the Accepted Bio area as usual and will be visible by everyone as usual.

We hope this will afford all new characters more time and privacy while they get a new character solidified.  As usual, new characters will be announced for all to admire in the Twitter!

    Mature Themes

Over the course of the past 10 months, we have been re-evaluating our policies concerning what types of plots and content are allowed and what types are prohibited.  Our motivation has been driven by the question: "Does this help facilitate good roleplaying?"  We have decided, with your input, that expanding the allowed content to more mature themes would be beneficial to our game.

Please re-read the Code of Conduct and familiarize yourself with the new boundaries.  In sum, more leeway is now granted for sex, violence, drugs/alcohol, swearing and controversial topics/characters.  Please note this is not a free for all, but that you now have much more freedom to explore these themes.

In order to show respect for all of our members, threads containing controversial topics or heightened mention of sex or violence should be tagged at the very beginning of the thread, or with an [M] in the title.  Tagging does not permit you to exceed the boundaries of the new rules, but rather lets your fellow writers know they can expect possibly controversial material ahead.  Always check with your writing partner before posting anything that might possibly offend them.  Really, the general idea here is to communicate with one another and show respect.

These policies are effective immediately.  If you have any questions about what crosses that line, or just want more clarification or are worried about these new boundaries, please speak with a staff member.  Our hope is that these changes will be positive and that no member will feel alienated because of these changes.

Advice on How to Tag for Mature Themes:
    • Tag [M] in the Title.  Example: "Pulling Weeds [M]"
    and/or
    • Declare mature content in the first post. Example: Contains violence, language & drug use.

    Classes!

Not so much a policy change, as a tweak. Students & Professors please read!

Professors: You only need to post four total classes over the course of the whole semester.  You may post more if you can/wish to keep up with that many!  Don't forget to use house points!

Students: We've heard that some student writers are getting overwhelmed with classes, especially those writers who have two or three student characters! We get that! Here is our advice:
    • At minimum, we only expect students to role-play half of the classes available to them.
    • For the classes you can't get to, please PM the professor! Let them know that this time around you'll not be writing, but that your student would have attended class on that day.
    • Next time classes come around, try to mix it up and attend the classes you didn't last time.

House Points: To be fair, here is how we suggest house points, grades & attendance.
    • Award up to 5 points if a character role-plays attending class.
    • If a student does not role-play attending class, do not take off points.  (This will help players who are Inactive or are in other classes not do too much damage for their house.)
    • Feel free to dock points to students who role-play they are tardy, or role-play they are skipping.
    • Grades are purely in-character.  You can base this on attendance, participation and if you assign homework for fun.  It's always good to communicate between students and profs about grades.
    • Feel free to award and dock points for in-class behavior.  It's really fun and keeps things exciting.  It also encourages participation.

Izadora Franti

This sweet, innocent looking girl can both capture the attention of and torture even the strongest of men - and we don't mean torture them psychologically, either. Though dangerous and wild, Iza Franti is a clever witch who pays homage to her hungry stomach when it is required, and takes delight in accepting previously forbidden vices from young bookhunters. But perhaps it is her hidden past that draws us in?

This moving thread brings us perhaps the most shocking news so far; a letter is delivered to Knox Greyfriar and to Devlin Matthews at the same time. But what secret do these letters contain? Only Lucretia Santoya Matthews knows the answer to that question. Read on to watch the fireworks explode.

Knox Greyfriar, Devlin Matthews

Featured Quotes

"Locking the door behind him, Devlin took a seat at the john and begin to read over the letter again, stopping only when Lucy banged on the door, demanding to be allowed in. "LUCY I HAD BURRITOS LAST NIGHT AND I AM DOING NUMBER TWO! GO AWAY!" He shouted at her. He heard her let out a faint whine of 'ew', in a voice indicating that she was already clutching her nose in a preemptive strike against possible fumes, before her footsteps faded back into the other room."

" “Hmm… Ho, ho, HO!” he finally bellowed, and wiggling his eyebrows he said, “If you do hit or slap Mr. Carter, Miss Nolan, I’ll take off the five points from you,” and taking the quill back into his hand and wiggling it at the Gryffindor, “and five points off of you since I will consider that you would’ve learned your lesson.”  The professor chuckled maniacally."

[After Tamis Raynor has called him an idiot] " “Takes one to…” Blinking, he frowned in concentration. “Takes…” Then he shook his head and rolled his eyes, teetering slightly to the side as he started laughing again. A hand moved out to hold him up from his little dizzy spell. “Idiot. I’ve heard that before.” "

    James' application

Thea plays Callum Knight, an obnoxious Fifth year Slytherin, who epitomizes Slytherin to the roots from his purist ideals, to his habit of quick tempered violence, to his sexist view of women (especially those in Hufflepuff). Watch out boys and girls, this one is a heartbreaker and a suckerpuncher.

Kat plays Kabir Ahmed, a Colonel for the Border Security Force stationed in India, a deeply wounded man who has loved and lost and lost some more. Wracked with survivor's guilt, he returns to a country that is more willing to kill him then help. (Curator: He needs a hug :( )

Writing Tip: Break it up!

  • Big blocks of text are difficult to read, easy to get lost in and can deter others from wanting to take part in a thread. So.. Break it up! Cut it into halves or thirds. Find the most logical place, where there is a subject or a scene change, and put in that nice little space. It does wonders to the look and feel of a thread, and makes it easier to read and process.

This goes double for long dialogue... Your character has to breath sometime ;). Add little actions like "She paused to take a deep breath before rushing back into her tirade" or "He found his throat had grown scratchy in his rage and paused to take a sip of some much needed water" between sections of long dialogue. A little break in there makes our characters seem more human and real.

In Case You Missed It

  • The Quidditch League!

All you quidditch nuts, listen up! We know it is hard to Roleplay quidditch games on a board like this, but our lovely Head Curator has some ideas up her sleeves. Check out the new site she made, The Quidditch League, and give a game a try. It isn't a RP board persey, but you can use characters from AO or make new ones and just play the game! If things work out, this board will be reflected in AO as Daily Prophet articles, so get over there and be a quidditch star!

    Featured Applications/Biographies

  • Back-Up Aides Needed!

We are looking for someone (or a few someones) to be our “back-up” Aide! This person would help keep us on track when we get behind in an area, such as Records, regardless of whose job it is. That way, staffers can take breaks from the site without worrying about things piling up. We’re looking for a person with flexibility, attention to detail, and a willingness to do whatever job needs doing (to a reasonable extent! We wouldn’t pile things on you suddenly).

If interested, please send a PM to Niobe Thursby!
