Magical Abduction of Robin Adani by Niobe Thursby January 7, 2009 LONDON - The Department of Magical Law Enforceme ...
Code of Conduct
Out of Character- All members will treat all other members and guests with respect and patience.
- Personal attacks, flaming or harassment will not be tolerated.
- Absolutely no derogatory or discriminatory language or behavior concerning race, religion, sexual orientation, class, gender, political stance or nationality will be permitted.
- All members are asked to comply gracefully with any correctional action taken by the staff.
- All members have the right to contact a staff member if they feel they are being harassed or mistreated by any member.
Character/Account Creation- All writers must disclose all accounts they hold when making new characters.
- It does not matter what your username is when you register an account, but your display name must be in the First Last format. Titles, middle initials, suffixes are your choice.
- Within the construct of the Harry Potter universe as created by JK Rowling, all members should make all possible efforts to respect the artistic integrity of other writers. (In other words, no copying.)
- All members should be aware of and comply with the Character Activity Policy.
- Canon Characters, characters with special abilities, or characters in special roles may be in high demand, so those characters will be subject to a stricter activity policy.
- All members should be aware and ready to comply with the Character Limit Policy.
- All characters must be in accord with the Character Guidelines for their character type, as well as all rules listed here, especially in regards to realism and inappropriate content.
In-Character- Profanity: Absolutely no real-life racial or gender slurs will be permitted in-character. Potterverse words like 'mudblood' are permitted. Mild and infrequent swearing is permitted.
- Tobacco/Substance/Alcohol: Writers may explore themes of substance abuse. Adult characters have general free reign, while we'd ask for more restraint with characters under the age of 17. Characters under the age of 17 may experiment with adult substances but are asked not to delve too far. Writers should be aware that in-character consequences will likely result if writers depict their characters breaking in-character laws concerning alcohol or tobacco. (Example: A student drinking on school grounds should expect severe punishment, not excluding expulsion. The writer must acknowledge this is a somewhat inevitable consequence of that character's actions.)
Topics containing substance use should be tagged in the first post. - Sex: Characters of 17 years and older may describe mature sexual acts, but they must mark [M]in the subject of the thread. Descriptions of sexual acts in these pages should be rated R, not XXX, meaning that they are still suggestive and are not pornography. (For example, an R rated movie may show nudity and what appears to be sexual intercourse, but it does not show actual penetration as an XXX or NC17 film would.) Rape or any sort of non-consensual/forced sexual actions are strictly prohibited.
Please tag 'sexual content' in the first post. - Violence: Graphic violence is permitted. But pure sadism/torture for the sake of torture should be avoided. (If the violence is for the sole sake of causing harm for enjoyment, it has gone too far.)
If a topic contains graphic violence, please tag in the first post. - Controversial Characters: Controversial Characters or plots are permitted, but writers should use sensitivity and caution. Please be congnizent that these real life issues affect writers in their daily life and should be explored with respect. Examples of permitted controversial topics:
- Homicide/Suicide
Drug addiction Abuse Mental/Physical disability
When these topics are addressed in either a biography or a thread, the thread should be tagged at the top/first post.
Examples of controversial topics that are prohibited:
- For all of these policies, we understand that there is a difference between what occurs in reality and what we choose to allow here. Role-playing only partially mimics reality, that a role-play is a stylized mimicry of reality and we are able to choose which aspects of a character to include, and which ones to omit. Our omissions are in place for the dual purpose of ensuring that all audiences may participate in our role-play, but also to ensure our role-play is focused on appropriate plot.
- We have attempted to be as specific as possible to prevent an overly subjective interpretation, but occasionally a staff member will have to use her or his best judgment and make a call you may not agree with. Accept those decisions in a respectful manner.
Writing- All members should strive to use the best English writing they are capable of. Notify the staff if you are a non-native speaker of English, or have other limitations that prevent you from consistent style and correctness.
- Role-play posts must be in the limited third person omniscient perspective, in the past tense. Jacobo would write, "Picking up his wand, Jacobo shouted at the intruder," not "I picked up my wand and shouted at the intruder."
- Members may role-play via instant messenger. However, the role-play session needs to be converted into paragraph format, proofread, and posted in a thread on the board to count in the Absit Omen game.
- Role-play must not be done in netspeak, or abbreviations.
- Writers may not decide the actions, reactions, speech or thoughts of any character but their own. If you want to throw a punch at Theodora, it's up to Theodora if it lands and how she reacts. Controlling another player is often called godmoding, and it is not courteous roleplay.
- Do not give your character information he or she would not have logically from the stories. Just because the writer knows something, it does not mean the character knows.
- Allow bad things to happen to your characters sometimes. No one gets out of every pickle every time. Super powerful characters are not fun to play with.
- In Posting Etiquette, we go into more detail on how to role-play well.
Realism & Canon- Be open to the results of your character's actions. All actions have results, and sometimes they are not what we plan. Sometimes it is reasonable to avoid them, but many times it is not reasonable to ignore what would be realistic consequences.
- Those who choose to do illegal things or use Dark Magic in-character should be ready to be considered a criminal. Criminals get chased by Aurors, or need to stay hidden to avoid punishment.
- Do not contradict things established in the Harry Potter canon. When information is not provided in canon, be sure to act in the spirit of the canon when creating new bits and pieces.
Staff- Absit Omen staff are all volunteers, who agree to serve the membership to the best of their ability in a specific capacity for a predetermined period of time. When the term of service ends, the staff member can continue, or the spot can be filled with someone else.
- Most members are eligible to become a staff member if a position opens.
- Any staff member may be removed from their post if they are not able or willing to fulfill their commitment.
- For more detailed information on Staff Policy, go to Staff Information.
Privacy- No member shall reveal any identifying information about themselves or their location.
- No staff member shall ever ask for more than a first name or nickname, and if the writer is over the age of 13 or not.
Text Formatting & Images- Each character may have an avatar measuring 125p x 125p. The avatar must be a representation of the character and contain no material that violates the code of conduct. For more about specific Avatar regulations, please visit the Avatar Registry.
- Images are allowed in signatures. The image should not exceed 200px in height, and 600px in width. The signature must depict your character.
- Font in signatures cannot exceed 6 lines of text, and font sizes must remain reasonable.
- All role-play posts must use the default color and text. Other posts such as OOC posts, character networks and character biographies can have colored and formatted text. Always choose colors and fonts that are easy to read.
